Clinical Social Worker, Emergency Department

Boston Children’s Hospital Social Work Emergency Services team responds to social needs and issues in the Emergency Department and throughout inpatient services. This includes performing biopsychosocial assessments, implementing trauma-informed, strengths-based interventions, and providing management and advocacy for both patients and families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to social needs and issues in the Emergency Department and inpatient services.
  • Complete biopsychosocial assessments and other specialized trauma assessments.
  • Provide trauma-informed, strength-based interventions for patients and families.
  • Screen and assess patients for social determinants of health.
  • Provide case management and advocacy for patients and families.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and community providers.
  • Provide brief, solution-focused interventions and develop safety plans with patients as needed.
  • Use techniques including motivational interviewing, reflective listening, and trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral treatment to support patients and families.
  • Provide crisis intervention and problem-solving support as needed.
  • Provide information, referrals, and counseling related to child protective needs, intimate partner violence, end-of-life needs, community violence, substance use/abuse, mental health concerns, and homelessness.
  • Provide education, crisis intervention, and emotional support to patients and families.
  • Communicate effectively and proactively with healthcare professionals and team members.
  • Develop and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
Education

Minimum qualification:

A master’s degree in social work.

Experience
  • Previous medical social work experience highly preferred.
  • Strong clinical skills and experience with various therapeutic modalities.
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations. Bicultural/Bilingual competency is a plus.
  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment (sense of humor is valued!).
Licensure/Certification s
  • LCSW licensure in the state of MA required; LICSW in the state of MA highly preferred.
Schedule and Benefits

This 20-hour part-time position is scheduled Sundays and Monday evenings 1:30 p‑12 a.
