- Must be a current employee of a Massachusetts police department with permanent civil service status in the specified eligible title(s) (Police Lieutenant) as of the exam date.
- Must have at least one year of service since appointment and performed duties of the eligible title(s). Temporary and permanent service may be combined for this requirement.
- For positions lowered to entry level rank, must have served at least one year (or three years depending on municipality) in the force and performed duties of the eligible title(s).
- Police officers must have one year of permanent experience after completing a police academy; student‑officer status does not count.
The Captain is a senior command officer responsible for the leadership, administration, and operational effectiveness of an assigned division, bureau, or specialized unit. The Captain serves as the executive representative of the Chief of Police and is responsible for strategic planning, personnel management, fiscal oversight, and inter‑agency coordination.
Application Process- Apply online via the Massachusetts Civil Service portal; do not create a new account—use your existing Civil Service Online account.
- All applications must be received by the closing date and confirm receipt via email; otherwise the application is not accepted.
- Questions may be emailed to civil service.
- Assessment center will be conducted by a third‑party vendor chosen by the municipality.
- Individuals may claim credit for employment or experience in the title of Police Captain if the service was in a permanent, provisional, or temporary after certification status.
- Provide supporting documentation on original letterhead with a signature from the appointing authority or on the Employment Verification Form for Sole Assessment Center.
- Claims must be submitted within seven days after the assessment center date by email to civil service or attached to the application.
- Credit is only applied for a passing score and cannot be added to a failing score.
- Qualified veterans, disabled veterans, or individuals with 25 years of service in a regular police or police force who pass the assessment may receive up to two preference points.
- Maximum two preference points are allowed, even if criteria for both veteran and 25‑year preferences meet.
- Claims must be submitted on the application and supporting documents (DD‑214 or Employment Verification Form) emailed to civil service.
- Candidates who need reasonable accommodations due to a documented impairment must request them from the delegation administrator (Deputy Chief James Hoar, jhoar).
