Job TitleWage & Hour Investigator I (Industrial Safety and Health Inspector I)
Unit and GradeMOSES UNIT 9, JOB GRADE 19.
LocationPublic Protection & Advocacy Bureau, Fair Labor Division. Potential assignments:
Boston, New Bedford, Springfield.
- Investigate violations of labor standards under M.G.L. Chapter 149, Chapter 151, and related regulations.
- Conduct interviews related to wage violation complaints.
- Write reports and respond to inquiries from employees, employers, and their representatives.
- Perform site visits and conduct payroll audits, analyzing financial records.
- Testify at civil and criminal hearings, before the grand jury, and support enforcement of wage, hour, child labor, prevailing wage, and related laws.
Full‑time, non‑exempt. Hybrid model allows remote workdays; in‑office days require presence at a designated office in Boston or a regional office.
SalaryBi‑weekly: $2,528.57 to $3,695.03. Salary set according to collective‑bargaining agreements and personnel procedures. Starting salary based on applicable salary chart for Unit 9 MOSES Scientist and Engineering Titles Grade 19, adjusted for years of relevant experience.

Applicants must have at least two years of full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) professional or technical experience in inspection or investigatory work, or in the regulation or enforcement of wage and hour laws, or an equivalent combination of required experience and applicable substitutions. Possession of a current, valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license is required.
Substitutions- An associate’s degree majoring in a related discipline may substitute for one year of the required experience.
- A bachelor’s degree majoring in a related discipline may substitute for the required experience.
- Education toward such a degree is prorated.
- Professional, technical, or investigatory experience in labor standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Knowledge of construction and building trades, and/or immigrant communities.
- Strong organization, analytical, interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer‑based law‑enforcement tools.
- Language skills, including Spanish, Portuguese, or Chinese, are a plus.
The ideal candidate demonstrates commitment to public interest, builds rapport with diverse communities, communicates effectively across multiple platforms, adapts to changing priorities, and handles confidential information with discretion. The candidate must work independently and as part of a team, meet deadlines, exhibit strong organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Office proficiency), and have accurate attention to detail. Knowledge of Massachusetts Wage and Hour Laws is desirable but not required.
