Senior Underwriter – Financial Institutions
About the RoleAs a Senior Underwriter at Markel, you will evaluate, price, and manage underwriting risk for corporate financial institutions. You will collaborate with regional managers, national product line leaders, and producers to ensure profitability, market the Markel product, and maintain high-quality relationships across the appointed producer base.
Responsibilities- Review, analyze, accept, and decline retail Financial Institutions risks to ensure profitability for Markel.
- Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.
- Manage the existing renewal book and implement corrective measures to meet profitability expectations.
- Communicate with regional managers and national product line leaders on individual accounts and make recommendations concerning operations, systems, and procedures.
- Participate in audits and underwriting meetings as required.
- Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers while monitoring the entire appointed producer base for profitability and production.
- Review competitor forms and pricing and effectively market the Markel product within the competitive landscape.
- Provide training or technical assistance to department underwriting support staff.
- 3-5 years of Financial Institutions underwriting experience on the East Coast of the USA.
- Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflecting progression to increasing responsibility.
- Demonstrated marketing and relationship building skills.
- Four‑year college degree and/or CPCU or similar designation preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Microsoft Office skills including MS Word and MS Excel.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
Base salary range: $92k – $127k per year with a 25% bonus potential.
