Job Duties:
Hands‑on field inspection and subsequent reporting of complex and statewide bridges, including inspection and analysis of Non‑redundant Steel Tension Members and ancillary structures. Review as‑built plans, rating reports, previous inspection reports, and structure inspection files for pertinent background information and new developments. Operate specialized inspection access equipment such as under‑bridge inspection units, manlifts, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, and high‑rail lifts. Work at extreme heights, in confined spaces, under varied weather conditions, and on varied shifts;
carry 50 lbs and perform light manual labor (cleaning steel with hammer blows). Document structural conditions in a detailed inspection report and electronically submit to MASSDOT and Massport using 4D Bridge management software. Prepare detailed sketches using AutoCAD or Microstation. Perform Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) as required: PT Dye Penetrant Testing to find surface defects in structural members or welds, and UTT Ultrasonic Thickness Testing to measure remaining member thickness.
Assist in preparing critical deficiency finding notifications. Compile data from the field and office records/reports. Participate in planning, designing, and developing rehabilitation and/or replacement plans for infrastructure, as needed. Perform structural analysis and design to determine load‑rating capacity of bridges, as needed.
8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Night shifts (8:30 pm to 5 am) as required by assigned bridge or ancillary structure location. Occasional weekend shifts as required for site access.
Job Requirements- Bachelor’s (or foreign degree equivalent) in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering plus six‑to‑eight (6–8) years of experience as an inspector or similar engineering roles. Must have experience with bridge/ancillary field inspections.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain and maintain various railroad agency Right‑of‑Way certifications.
