SUMMARY

OF DUTIES

The Service Engineer applies electrical and/or mechanical expertise to troubleshoot, test and repair the systems and equipment related to the Amtrak's fleet, that includes electrical and diesel locomotives, coaches and trainsets. Leads and directs system and equipment Amtrak's QMP Technicians and provides troubleshooting training to them on various systems. The Service Engineer will be the main technical support for assigned geographical area.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS
  • Operates the on-board diagnostic monitoring system of the equipment
  • Diagnoses cause of electronic, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems malfunction or failure of the control equipment and its components in the trainsets using knowledge of trainsets, technical manuals, and troubleshooting instruments.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions related to the equipment and proposes solutions or modifications to avoid future failures by working with the Maintenance Engineering Department.
  • Analyzes and interprets data collected after the revenue service and provides delays and technical reports at the end of their shift.
  • Trains Amtrak’s QMP employees in proper troubleshooting techniques maintenance and repair procedures to HSR technicians.
  • May ride trains on a regular basis to determine enroute performance of control/mechanical systems and to assess dynamic state of system repairs.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to collaboratively work with others in a teamwork environment.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work and manage time.
  • Ability to lead and train others.
  • Ability to work extended hours and be on call and available on an emergency basis.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays to maintain 24-hour coverage.
  • Experience/ability to read schematics and interpret technical documents and instructions.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills, including experience defining problems, collecting data, and drawing valid conclusions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting electrical, electronic and/or mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems using computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • 6 years of experience required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3 or more years of relevant experience preferred
  • Proficient computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Projects.
  • Knowledge of FRA, FDA, and AAR Standards and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of high voltage electrical systems.
  • Technical and mechanical proficiency of diesel mechanical systems
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Will require both working inside and outside where temperatures may be below 55 degrees F or may exceed 90 degrees

    F.
  • Will require working alone and occasionally in either wet or dry conditions.
  • Will frequently be working on ladders, with moving vehicles, and with machinery.
  • Typically bends, stoops and crouches on a regular basis to diagnose equipment/systems or adjust setting on machinery.
COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
