AboutThe Role
Steer North America is looking for a motivated, self‑starting problem‑solver to join our Planning and Design team. The team delivers innovative, impactful solutions to clients across the United States, Canada and beyond.
Responsibilities- Work alongside planners, economists, designers, financial modellers and technical specialists to conceptualise, develop and deliver client projects in multimodal planning, regional planning, TDM and equitable mobility.
- Identify transit needs and prioritise investment across California’s state highway system.
- Create a Smart City Strategic Plan for the Southern California region.
- Develop a Citywide Transportation Demand Management strategy for the City of Culver City.
- Determine service options for new BRT routes across New Jersey.
- Examine the economic impact of rail in economically distressed regions.
- Manage own work to meet budget and quality expectations, with potential to oversee work by others.
- Support the Planning & Design practice through client engagement and proposal development.
- Mentor and support early‑career professionals.
- 3–5 years of transportation planning experience (Senior Consultant: 5–8 years).
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred).
- Strong consulting skills: client listening, scope definition, time and resource management, margin control.
- Effective communication skills: verbal, written and graphic (graphs, flow charts, infographics).
- Experience with public‑sector clients, including agencies related to transportation, housing, land use, energy and economic development.
- Project and team management skills – utilisation planning, task allocation and commercial management of consulting projects.
- Experience developing successful proposals for public‑sector requests (EOIs, RFQs, RFPs).
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment and a high level of personal accountability.
- Technical support across 2–3+ disciplines: strategic planning, multimodal planning, corridor studies, governance, scenario planning, stakeholder facilitation, business case development, demand management, data analysis and visualization, applied research, decision‑support and complex transportation models (GIS, EMME, Trans
CAD, R, Python, etc.). - Proficiency with visualisation tools such as Illustrator, InDesign, Tableau, Power BI or similar.
- Familiarity with emerging best practices in smart cities, micro‑mobility and urban transportation.
- Detail‑oriented with strong prioritisation, multi‑tasking and deadline management.
- Ability to delegate, learn quickly and enjoy developing new skills.
We value in‑person collaboration and client engagement. All full‑time employees are non‑exempt and are encouraged to spend 60% of their time either in office or on‑site with clients. Typical work week is 40 hours (Canada 37.5 hours). Part‑time opportunities have different hour and exemption expectations.
