Lead Teacher, Special Education, Substantially Separate Program - KIPP Academy Boston Charter School

The Special Education Sub-Separate Lead Teacher will be responsible for instructing a small group of students in core content areas (Math, Reading, Humanities, and Science) and providing classroom support with aides and/or other teachers as appropriate. The teacher will collaborate with general‑education teachers to support students during inclusion opportunities, manage IEP paperwork, conduct functional behavior assessments, and advocate for students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Classroom Responsibilities
    • Create and internalize daily aligned lesson plans, unit plans, rubrics, and assessments.
    • Modify standards for 1–4 content areas to meet students’ IEP goals.
    • Implement a modified grading scale as needed per IEPs.
    • Set specific, ambitious goals with all students and leverage resources to achieve them.
    • Use best practices to execute engaging, rigorous, and accessible instruction.
    • Infuse core values into daily lessons and school practice.
  • Complete Functional Behavior Assessments (with BCBA guidance) as needed.
  • Provide healing‑centered instruction and create a healing‑centered environment.
  • Collaborate with the psychologist to develop and run trauma‑informed, social‑emotional, and life‑skills groups.
  • Ensure all children feel affirmed, valued, and challenged every day.
  • Execute MCAS Alternate portfolios (for applicable students).
School And Professional Responsibilities
  • Obtain required MTEL and SEI endorsements within the first year of employment; preferred:
    Special Education licensure.
  • Provide secondary support in content areas when not leading the classroom.
  • Design, execute, and refine the vision for student culture alongside school leaders.
  • Conduct ongoing progress monitoring of student progress toward academic and social‑emotional outcomes.
  • Lead the 504 and IEP processes for all classroom students.
  • Work collaboratively with counselors and team members to create and implement Behavior Support Plans.
  • Participate in school‑wide and individual professional development, including pre‑service training and weekly sessions.
  • Take ownership of professional growth: meet regularly with a coach, implement feedback, engage in live coaching.
  • Perform necessary support duties (coverage, bus, lunch, dismissal).
  • Develop strong relationships with families through events and consistent phone calls.
  • Offer support and receive constructive feedback from colleagues to foster a professional working atmosphere.
  • Collaborate with grade‑level and content teams to tackle common challenges and implement grade‑wide systems.
  • Collaborate with related service providers and general‑education teachers.
  • Maintain dependable attendance according to the school calendar.
General Requirements and Responsibilities

  • Engage in regional professional development and community events as required.
  • Demonstrate data‑driven decision making and problem‑solving skills.
  • Show self‑awareness, flexibility, and emotional intelligence in a diverse setting.
  • Use interpersonal and self‑management skills to support behavioral and emotional needs safely.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and others, both in‑person and virtually.
  • Maintain physical mobility for tasks such as kneeling, walking, and restraining a student in emergencies.
  • Have the strength to lift up to 20 pounds and perform repetitive hand motions.
  • Operate a computer and office equipment with manual dexterity.
Qualifications
  • Alignment with KIPP MA’s mission and values.
  • Evidence of driving student growth and creating inclusive, rigorous learning environments.
  • Passion for Special Education and Healing‑Centered Learning.
  • 2+ years of full‑time teaching experience (Special Education preferred).
  • Preferred:
    Special Education licensure.
  • Preferred:
    Experience with Special Education laws and paperwork.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with Google Suite.
  • Pass a Criminal Background Check.
What We Offer

Salary: $63,000 – $102,500 per 1.0 FTE (45 hrs/wk), based on experience. Salary increases for advanced degrees (+$3,000 for first, +$1,500 for second). The role includes a $1,000 signing bonus, an annual $2,000 retention bonus, and other possible bonuses.
