SUMMARY

The IP Trainer II helps document, deliver, manage, and analyze intellectual property (IP) training for all new and existing members of Legal Support Services in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and procedures, as as and departmental policies and best practices, as well as practice and support-related software applications and other training needs as necessary under the direction of the Manager of IP Training.

The IP Trainer II will be responsible for new hire orientations and training, ongoing training programming for existing staff, training for practice-related software applications, one-on-one and specialized training as needed, third-party training for staff and administration, and any other matters deemed appropriate in accordance with firm and departmental policies, procedures, and training needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with the design and delivery of intellectual property training programs and resources for new and existing members of Legal Support Services.
  • Assists the Manager of IP Training, other training team members, and other firm management to identify and address training needs within Legal Support Services.
  • Assists with the creation, drafting, and maintenance of curricula, training manuals, and other instructional documentation.
  • Utilizes a variety of training methods, communication skills, and presentation skills to encourage and enhance participation and increase opportunities for learners’ success.
  • Creates a supportive environment in which learners are comfortable asking and answering questions, making comments, and sharing concerns.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and patience toward learners and their needs, including identifying and meeting the learners’ needs for feedback and clarification.
  • Assess the extent to which learners achieve training objectives including, but not limited to, identifying any competency deficiencies and addressing training issues and needs with the Manager of IP Training and respective firm management.
  • Keeps apprised of new trends and updates at the USPTO to ensure efficient delivery of material content and topics to support staff which includes, but is not limited to, researching USPTO rules and regulations; reviewing USPTO alerts, IP related blogs, etc.; and/or working with members of firm committees and/or management.
  • Assists with development and implementation of best practices, as well as procedures to ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Provides problem‑solving research and feedback relating to new and/or revised procedures, law and/or rule changes, group/department/firm initiatives, etc. as needed.
  • Continuously works to maintain consistency in the training team’s practices and improve training services.
  • Demonstrates flexibility with addressing various and changing training and/or business needs for individuals, the department, and/or the firm.
  • Establishes and maintains credibility through personal conduct, social practices, demonstration of content expertise, and professionalism.
  • Serves as a backup/alternate to other training team members as needed.
  • Assists with the assessment, testing, training, and implementation of new and existing software as needed.
  • Assists with department and/or firm needs as needed.
  • Assists with projects and participates in pilot programs.
  • Acts as a training resource for other groups or departments.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of three (3+) years of IP experience in a law firm or professional setting. Law firm setting preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of IP prosecution procedural terminology, requirements, and workflow.
  • Demonstrated level of comfort in a professional teaching/training role including the ability to interpret needs and respond within established guidelines with minimal supervision.
