About the Department:

HMS MED science’s mission is to inspire and empower a rising generation of STEM leaders. Our program immerses students in realistic and dynamic simulated medical emergencies that transform the way students approach and solve problems. HMS MED science engages over 4,000 high school students (including nearly 1,200 Boston Public School students) through school‑year and summer programs.

Job Description

HMS MED science has an opening for an experienced team teacher for its high school biology‑based enrichment program. In addition to teaching, this position will be responsible for coordinating the logistics of our programming for various partners and supporting the training of volunteers who join our teaching team. This team member will directly support the work that advances the goals and vision of HMS MED science.

This role will focus primarily on MED science’s clinical program but may have the opportunity to teach other program areas (including laboratory science, forensic science, and biomedical engineering) over time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Teacher:
    Delivers interactive lectures, simulation cases, and debriefs that utilize innovative and unique pedagogy techniques aligned with program goals of critical thinking, problem solving, building teamwork, communication skills, developing personal health literacy, and continued interest in STEM fields. Collaborates with the MED science team to deliver school‑year and summer programming. Instructs students in medical skills, terminology, and scientific literacy (training provided).
  • Program Coordination:
    Coordinates the programming for at least 20 partnering high school classroom teachers for the fall and spring semester courses: discusses logistics, individualizes program curriculum calendar, provides program materials, monitors completion of required paperwork & surveys. Coordinates within the MED science teaching team: establishes roles for each session, is responsible for the set‑up and breakdown of session materials. Provides support and training as needed to partnering high school teachers, interns, and volunteers on the MED science curriculum and pedagogy.

    Supervises student survey administration ensuring 100% rate of completion.
  • Teacher Training:
    Trains newly hired teachers and volunteers on the curriculum, meets ahead of class sessions to run training and observes classes to provide feedback.
  • Curriculum Development:
    Assists in refining written materials for pedagogy evaluation, and other documents needed for program expansion. Works with leadership and teaching team to develop and support curricular innovation and cultural competency in the classroom.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to teach 3–4 in‑person sessions each day (75 minutes/session).
  • Requires assisting in set‑up of simulation equipment and clinical skills training, which can include lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
