Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting
The Director of Accounting & Financial Reporting will oversee all accounting and financial reporting activities for the portfolio of properties managed by SM. This is a hands‑on leadership position that requires deep expertise in commercial real‑estate accounting, strong team‑management capabilities, and the ability to produce accurate, timely financial reporting in a deadline‑driven environment.
This role works closely with clients, property and asset management teams, auditors, and senior leadership to ensure high‑quality financial operations and reporting.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements for clients, lenders, joint venture partners, and other stakeholders, including monthly reporting, capital calls, distribution recommendations, and loan draw submissions
- Ensure accounting and financial reporting activities comply with all applicable agreements, including management agreements, joint venture agreements, development agreements, and mortgage documents
- Interpret lease agreements and support the accounting and analysis of complex transactions such as acquisitions, dispositions, debt transactions, and complex lease structures
- Partner with property and asset management teams to develop operating budgets, forecasts, CAM reconciliations, and required monthly, quarterly, and annual client reporting
- Manage the onboarding and offboarding of acquisitions, dispositions, and new developments, ensuring smooth accounting system transitions and proper management of banking activity
- Validate lease data accuracy prior to system activation and maintain data integrity across accounting platforms
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of client‑utilized accounting systems across multiple portfolios
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Accountants and Senior Accountants while maintaining high standards for accuracy, productivity, and professional development
- Coordinate and deliver both initial and ongoing staff training aligned with company policies, procedures, and best practices
- Manage multiple deadlines while ensuring team accountability for timely and accurate deliverables
- Serve as the primary point of contact for client tax preparation and audit engagements
- Promote continuous improvement through process automation, documentation, and cross‑functional collaboration
- Partner with peer leaders to share best practices and enhance operational efficiency
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred but not required
- 7+ years of commercial real estate accounting experience
- 3‑5 years of people management experience
- Strong experience preparing and reviewing real estate financial statements
- Experience with Yardi required; MRI experience a plus
- Solid understanding of CAM reconciliations, real estate tax escalations, and lease accounting
- Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Comfortable working in a paperless, technology‑driven, and virtual environment
- Flexible and adaptable with enthusiasm for growth and change
- Collaborative team player with a positive, solutions‑oriented mindset
- Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment
Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs.
