Senior Accountant - Boston MA/Leading Law Firm
Our team is working with a leading law firm based in Boston looking to hire a Senior Accountant to their growing team. The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing the firm’s day‑to‑day accounting operations while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong internal controls across all financial activities.
This role oversees cash management, accounts payable, general ledger activity, payroll, partner‑related accounting, and month‑end close processes, including complex reconciliations and journal entries. The Senior Accountant plays a key role in reviewing and approving payments, maintaining accounting policies and documentation, improving processes and systems, and supporting audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting.
Working closely with the Finance Director and Payroll team, this position also mentors junior staff and contributes to special projects that support the firm’s overall financial integrity and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities- Evaluate current accounting processes and identify opportunities for improvements and efficiency gains.
- Develop and recommend enhanced workflows, tools, or procedures to strengthen accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
- Ensure the operation of all automated systems and forms for handling timekeeping, billing, bookkeeping, and related matters are in place.
- Assist in mentoring and reviewing the work of the junior and staff accountants.
- Monitor daily cash while communicating account balances to Finance Director.
- Maintain an updated AP payment calendar.
- Review and clean the fixed assets list from the city of Boston and ensure disposed assets are cleared.
- Enter and follow up on all monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries, including intercompany invoices, payments, depreciation, and defined contribution.
- Prepare month‑end reconciliations of all firm bank accounts related to payroll, operating, Money Market, IOLTA, and other non‑trust client funds. Follow up and correct all variances and outstanding checks. Reconciliation reports should be prepared and saved in both Excel and PDF formats at the end of each month.
- Reconcile IOLTA/ESCROW bank accounts and ensure abandoned property is communicated with the related attorneys and that the State and Federal laws are followed.
- Review GL entries weekly and make necessary corrections where needed. Ensure all expenses are entered in their correct GL and that financial tax reporting is followed. If new GL accounts need to be opened, communicate with Director of Finance.
- Process partner’s draws and distributions and maintain partner distribution records, including payment of all benefits & deductions.
- Prepare filings for firm’s property tax, sales and use tax, abandoned property, and year‑end 1099s.
- Support internal and external audits and assist in preparing the documents and files for the year‑end external audit.
- Assist in entering the year‑end budget amounts from AFS to the Practice management system.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or equivalent.
- 4+ years of progressively responsible related work experience in a professional services firm.
- Proficiency in Elite 3E is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, and financial analysis.
