The role of Shipping Supervisor serves as the front line manager for the shipping department. This role is integral in ensuring short and long term department operations are efficient, effective, and successfully completed while adhering to established standard protocols. This role works under the direction of the Shipping Superintendent to develop strategies; implement plans/resolutions and help lead the direction of specific tasks that support the storage, packaging, shipment and delivery of carbon black to customers.

Functions
  • Directs a team of shipping employees completing a variety of management tasks.

    This includes but is not limited to:
    • Daily, monthly, annual performance review and monitoring
    • Progressive discipline process/documentation development and maintenance
    • Skill and career development
    • Time card review and approval
    • Staffing analysis and schedule development
    • Department or plant specific job training delivery or tracking
    • Daily adherence audit of documented department procedures and protocols
  • Perform regular and ad hoc audits and management of the shipping employees performance as well as department processes and procedures. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Workplace (warehouse and loading dock) cleanliness and house keeping
    • Review of all exported goods for accuracy and order adherence
    • Maintenance of the product inventory system to allow for
      • Ease of locating products (e.g. by grade, packaging type and product quality)
      • Optimal movement, either for storage or shipment purposes, throughout the warehouse
    • Efficient, effective and minimally impactful carbon black rerun activity
    • Enact an error free carbon black grade loading plan, which coordinates the proper flow of specified carbon black grades to its correct packaging
    • Regularly evaluate various shipping department metrics (e.g. bag pulling rates, bag weight controls, hopper car weights) in an effort to:
      • Maximize rates
      • Minimize carbon black returned through suction systems
      • Maximize operational efficiency
      • Minimize product preparation and load time
  • Maintain appropriate shipping department supplies (e.g. bags, labels, FIBC, etc.) utilizing the proper purchase request procedures
  • Develop and oversee budget related task including but not limited to:
    • Provide influence into current/future year budgetary expenses and allocations
    • Control expenses/minimize cost of known expenses where able
    • Assist with providing analysis and explanation of increased or unforeseen expenditures
  • Create, update and distribute scheduled and ad hoc reports/working documents including but not limited to:
    • Packaging & Rerun
    • Daily Loading Sheets
    • Various Inventory reports (e.g. supply/bag inventory, warehouse inventory, etc.)
    • Inspection & Maintenance (e.g. hopper car inspection
    • Schedule Control Sheets
    • Overtime Listing & Analysis
    • Shipment Preparation & Handling Instructions and Audit
  • Collaborate with various departments to ensure:
    • Uniform goals are established and realized
    • Collective partnership in addressing supply chain or shipment issues immediately as they arise
  • Prepare, plan and conduct scheduled or ad hoc department meetings including but not limited to:
    • Safety meetings
    • Continuing education
    • New or revised equipment/process orientation and management
    • Plant and department communications
  • Oversee the overall performance and protection of department equipment/vehicles ensuring timely and proactive scheduling of maintenance
  • Recommend the development, testing and implementation of new and revised departmental processes and procedures with continuous improvement as a key element
  • Perform additional duties as required by Shipping Superintendent
Required

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Excellent organization, communication and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated success in delivering desired results
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and delegate responsibilities in an effective and efficient manner
  • Tactful training development and delivery skills
  • Ability to drive people, processes and projects to a singular goal in designated time frame
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite especially Word, Excel and Power Point
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in business management or logistics
  • 2 years carbon black manufacturing environment experience
