Associate Athletic Director for Sport Psychology & Mental Wellness

Boone, North Carolina

Position Summary

Contribute to the mission of the Athletics Department by participating in all areas of service delivery, with a special focus on student athletes and professionals within the Athletic Department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology, or related field, or Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field, and eligibility for appropriate licensure in North Carolina.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to obtain licensure in North Carolina within one year of start date and maintain licensure for the continuation of the appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest and experience providing clinical services and outreach programming to student athletes.
  • Interest and experience providing consultation in a university setting and building collaborative relationships with coaches, trainers, and Athletic Department staff.
  • APA-approved training for both academic and internship preparation.
  • Experience in a University Counseling Center.
  • Committed to a proactive student development perspective involving an active relationship with the campus community; demonstrates skills and interest in working with diverse populations; is team-oriented and collaborative with students, colleagues, and university staff; and has broad generalist clinical skills in assessing and intervening with a wide range of disorders, concerns, and degrees of pathology.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Duties of the position include short-term individual, group, and couples therapy; psychological assessment; crisis intervention; consultation; outreach and psycho educational workshops (sometimes after hours); clinical supervision and training; case management as needed; liaison/consultant relationships with university partners.
  • Provide clinical services to student‑athletes, while also coordinating their connection with the comprehensive services of the Counseling Center and other resources on and off campus.
  • Build collaborative relationships and provide consultation and mental‑health related education for coaches, athletic trainers, and Athletic Department staff.
  • Provide or arrange workshops for student‑athletes related to mental health topics as requested.
  • Serve as an active member of the Athletics Health Care Providers Team.
  • Provide performance enhancement services to students and teams.

Full Time Position

Work Schedule/Hours

Generally 8:00–5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday with some evenings and weekends; 40 hours per week; 12 months per year.
