Description of Department: The Department of Philosophy & Religion provides distinctive academic programs in which students critically and creatively examine the beliefs, values, practices, and institutions that shape human lives. The department guides students in becoming reflective and resilient individuals who contribute to their communities in constructive and meaningful ways. In its curriculum and campus engagements, it recognizes a plurality of the world’s many philosophical and religious perspectives.

Minimum Qualifications: MA in Religious Studies or related discipline

Essential Job Functions: The Department of Philosophy & Religion seeks to hire adjunct faculty for various courses for the Spring 2026 semester.

Course preparation and delivery, grading, and maintaining of office hours. Student engagement is expected. Face-to-face delivery at our Boone campus is preferred, but synchronous or asynchronous online delivery with virtual office hours will be considered.

Courses may include: REL 1110 Religion and Imaginary Worlds, REL 2010 Old Testament:
Jewish Scriptures, REL 2020 New Testament, REL 2300 Religion and the Good Life, REL 3115 Religion and the Arts, and REL 3770 Religion, Gender, and the Body. Descriptions of these courses, with the General Education requirements that they fulfill, can be found in the current Undergraduate Bulletin. Other courses dependent on department need and instructor expertise.

Preferred Qualifications: PhD or MA in Religious Studies; relevant teaching experience and evidence of effective teaching

Number of Hours Per Week: Varies based on course schedule (maximum 5 courses per academic year)

Number of Months per Year: 9

Hiring Range: Commensurate with qualifications and equity

Responsibilities
  • Course preparation and delivery, grading, and maintaining office hours. Student engagement is expected.

  • Teach courses in the catalog as described above or as department needs and instructor expertise allow.
