Ph.D. in Biology or a related field (minimum). Postdoctoral experience is desired. No minimum level required for interests in biostatistics, computational ecology, or ecological modeling. Expertise in quantitative/computational techniques combined with empirical field studies to address questions concerning evolutionary mechanisms, global change, or biodiversity/conservation is preferred.
Department InformationThe Department of Biology at Appalachian State University has 44 faculty, 6 technicians, and 3 administrators. It serves more than 1,000 undergraduate Biology majors and 48 graduate students. The department provides teaching, research, and community outreach opportunities, including access to a research greenhouse, a 67‑acre nature preserve, and a 250‑acre off‑campus field site.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will:
- Maintain excellence in teaching and research at a Master’s degree‑granting research institution.
- Develop and teach a quantitative ecology course for undergraduates and a graduate biostatistics course.
- Design and teach additional courses based on expertise and contribute to existing curriculum (e.g., Ecology, Introductory Biology).
Develop a competitive research program that engages undergraduate and master’s students.
Full‑time position (100% effort). 9 months per academic year. Proposed hire date: 08/01/2026. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD candidates will be considered only if evidence of successful dissertation defense is provided by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If not provided, the candidate will receive a one‑year fixed‑term contract as an Instructor with reduced salary. If degree verification is obtained before the contract ends, the candidate will be returned to the rank of Assistant Professor with full compensation beginning the following academic year.
