Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctorate in English or closely related field, including Indigenous Studies (Ph.D. in hand)
- A minimum of three years of university‑level teaching experience, including online instruction
Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required):
- Teaching and developing courses in North American Indigenous Literatures, including our existing Studies in American Indian Literature course
- Experience in pedagogies that support students of all backgrounds
- Active research and interest in North American Indigenous Literatures, with a secondary area of expertise in Multiethnic American Literatures welcomed
The Appalachian State University English Department offers multiple undergraduate programs—Creative Writing, Film, English Education, Literary Studies, and Rhetoric and Technical Writing—as well as an M.A. program with concentrations in Literary Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, and Teaching Literature and Writing. The Department has offered classes on North American Indigenous Literatures in the major for the past 20 years and supports an active Student American Indian Movement on campus, including the Gadugi Partnership in partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis full‑time, 9‑month, tenure‑track position carries a 3/3 teaching load, student advising, and a requirement to produce at least two peer‑reviewed publications (or equivalent) every three years. Service expectations include committee work and related department activities. Faculty are expected to demonstrate excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, employing inclusive pedagogies that support all students.

Applicants should review the ABD policy outlined below:
- ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD candidates must provide evidence of successful dissertation defense by July 31 (fall hire) or November 30 (spring hire). Failure to provide evidence results in a one‑year fixed‑term contract at instructor rank with reduced salary. Successful verification before the end of the fixed‑term contract results in assistant professor rank effective July 1 of the following academic year.
- No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered.
