Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice

Appalachian State University seeks an Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice to join the Department of Government and Justice Studies in Boone, NC. The position is full‑time, tenure‑track, and requires an active research agenda in policing and law enforcement. The teaching load is three courses per semester, predominantly face‑to‑face, with opportunities for instruction at App State’s Hickory campus or online depending on program need.

The appointment requires U.S. work eligibility; visa sponsorship is available.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related discipline earned at the time of appointment. A J.D. is not sufficient.
  • Evidence of successful defense of a dissertation (if ABD: defense must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire; ABD candidates will be considered with a reduction in rank and salary).
  • Areas of expertise: policing, law enforcement, and related issues.
  • Familiarity with scholarship in policing and law enforcement is strongly preferred.
  • Visa sponsorship is available for qualified candidates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach three courses per semester, primarily face-to-face, with the possibility of online or off-campus instruction.
  • Develop and maintain an active research agenda in policing, law enforcement, and related fields.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Serve the university and department through service and participation in meetings, committees, and student advising.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Department of Government and Justice Studies and the broader university community.
