Minimum Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree (B.S./ B.A.) in Physics, Engineering, Physics Education, or equivalent
  • Either a master’s degree (M.S./ M.A./ M.Ed. or equivalent) or be a National Board-certified high school physics teacher.

The Physics and Astronomy Department at Appalachian State University is looking for a Teacher-in-Residence (TIR). Successful applicants for the TIR position will be experienced teachers of public high school physics. Candidates must have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, student mentoring, and collaborating with regional schools. Candidates are especially encouraged to apply if they:

  • can show evidence of teaching excellence in the US at the high school level;
  • possess a strong background in physics education and pedagogy;
  • are committed to increasing the number of physics teachers;
  • have a history of engagement with outreach and student clubs or activities;
  • are National Board Certified teachers.

Description of the Department or Unit:

Appalachian State University is a public university with campuses in Boone and Hickory, North Carolina. Known as App State, it was started in 1899 as a teacher’s college and today has more than 20,000 students enrolled. App State provides over 150 bachelor’s degrees and 70 graduate degree programs, including two doctoral programs. In the Physics and Astronomy department, we have dedicated faculty and staff that support student participation with state‑of‑the‑art research laboratories, observatories and other educational programs that will enhance our majors’ learning experience.

We have over 160 undergraduate majors and over 30 graduate students. Our department is committed to excellent physics teaching and offers a B.S. in Physics with a concentration in Secondary Education and a Physics minor for Secondary Education majors, in addition to several other options. The mission of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University is to offer sustainable, nationally recognized degrees in which a diverse student body is enabled, through science‑intensive instruction and experiential learning delivered by well‑trained and empowered faculty and staff, to make productive, enduring contributions to the fields of physics and astronomy applicable to the Appalachian region, the state, the nation, and the world.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The TIR will work with the department to increase the number of physics secondary education majors and improve the retention of those majors through advising and engaging mentoring experiences. This could include:

  • fostering and developing relationships with the local school systems to support student teacher experiences and community colleges for recruitment;
  • engaging in local and campus outreach events;
  • supporting the observations and mentoring of students in their internships and student teaching;
  • supporting our departmental Learning Assistance Program;
  • conducting the training of students and faculty members teaching introductory physics labs and lectures;
  • conducting faculty and teacher training and workshops.
