Train Crew – Boone, IA –
Union Pacific Railroad
Join the Union Pacific Railroad team as a Train Crew member in Boone, IA. This role is responsible for the safe and timely movement of customer freight. No prior railroad experience is required; comprehensive training will be provided.
What to ExpectIn the first year, expected earnings are around $80,000, with potential to exceed $100,000 after five years. Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance are provided.
What Should You Know- Commit to a minimum of 2 years in the same craft and location.
- The 14‑week training class includes classroom and on‑job instruction; completion of all exams is required.
- After training, you will work road or yard service based on seniority.
- Road crews may be required to bridge two locations and travel away from home terminal, with lodging provided by Union Pacific.
- Yard/local crews sort inbound trains and build outbound trains.
- Coverage across the area may be required; lodging varies by collective bargaining agreement.
- On‑call 24 h/7 d availability may be required.
- First year may not receive paid time off except for sick days.
- Temporary furloughs are possible; recalls are seniority‑based.
- Union Pacific enforces strict drug and alcohol testing and post‑accident testing.

- Inspect equipment, locomotives, and rail cars for safety.
- Couple equipment, align drawbars, operate remote‑control locomotives, apply hand brakes, ride rail cars, replace couplers, and communicate via radio, hand signals.
- Maintain accurate written and electronic documentation.
- Observe all railroad rules, safety, operations, and Federal Railroad Administration regulations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Age 18 or older.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Clean driving record for the past 36 months; no suspensions, revocations, cancellations, or denials related to drug or alcohol incidents.
- No diversion, probation, or guilty plea related to drug or alcohol‑related driving incident.
- No refusal to undergo a drug or alcohol test related to vehicle operation.
- Successfully complete an English assessment before interview.
- Experience with second or third shifts.
- Experience working outdoors in diverse weather.
- Experience working with heavy equipment in motion.
- Experience working in confined spaces and at different heights.
Job Requirements
- Must pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT).
- Normal color vision; adequate depth perception; ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 85 lbs.
- Ability to perform coordinated hand movements and physically demanding tasks, including bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, maintaining balance while riding a rail car, and walking up to 5 miles per shift on uneven terrain.
- Capability to detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and respond promptly.
- Travel on trains; may be away from home terminal for a day or more.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Variable work hours; on call, even nights, weekends, holidays.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
