Position: Maintenance Worker 2 - Water

General Purpose

Perform a variety of semi‑skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operate a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water infrastructure. Contribute to the City’s vision, mission, and goals in the performance of all job duties. This classification is part of a series. The focus of this position is in the distribution Water section but will need to be able to work in all areas of water.

None. May assist in training and mentoring other employees and supervise temporary employees.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Maintenance Worker II is the intermediate‑level position in the Maintenance Series. Incumbents are expected to have sufficient knowledge of construction, maintenance and repair procedures and practices and once trained, the duties require a high level of accuracy and knowledge of maintenance procedures and policies in which consequences of an error would be of great detriment. The incumbent independently performs routine to somewhat complex level of duties and maintenance work in the division to which they are assigned and requires the exercise of considerable independent judgment and action within the policies and procedures of the department.

  • Assist in the training of lower‑level employees performing the duties of maintenance, construction and repair of city facilities, water, sewer, street, park and storm drainage facilities.
  • Perform work in a timely and professional manner. Perform duties in accordance with appropriate safety standards as outlined in the Accident Prevention Plan or other position specific safety responsibilities.
  • Safely and proficiently operate and/or drive various equipment and machinery
  • Interact courteously with citizens, customers, vendors, the public and other employees.
  • Respond to complaints and service requests, evaluate situation and explains findings to supervisor, Lead or Assistant Superintendent.
  • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and tools and refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Maintain a variety of records (handwritten and electronic) relating to maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and other areas.
  • Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects individually and as part of a crew.
  • Sets up traffic control devices and performs flagging functions in work zones; ensure a safe working environment according to established safety guidelines.
  • Perform routine maintenance of city infrastructure, facilities and equipment, to include, but not limited to carpentry, plumbing, minor roof repair and electrical work, and welding.
  • Prepare reports for Lead and Assistant Superintendent.
  • Monitor various monitoring systems to include telemetry, databases, security and fire alarms.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are essential to ensure optimal productivity and customer service.
  • May act as the Responsible Person on a job site in the absence of a Lead worker.
  • May serve and respond as the on‑call department representative after hours.
  • Work any day or time during emergencies for snow/ice control work, natural disaster response and recovery or for other unscheduled emergencies.
  • Assist other departments or divisions, as assigned.
  • May serve as a member of various committees as assigned.
  • Create an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by welcoming and meeting the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to the field.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
