Assistant Works Manager – North West (Lancashire & Northern Region)

You will be stepping into a permanent Assistant Works Manager position where your expertise will directly influence the successful delivery of civil engineering and highways projects, with long‑term frameworks providing stability and continuity of work.
The CompanyMy client is a specialist civil engineering and highways contractor serving local and transport authorities throughout the North West of England. With over 75 years of experience delivering highway schemes in the region, they have built a strong reputation for collaborative working, quality delivery and sustainable infrastructure improvements.
You will be joining a business that operates predominantly across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and surrounding areas, delivering drainage schemes, junction improvements and public infrastructure works. Approximately 80% of turnover comes from long‑term framework contracts (4‑10 years), providing you with security, continuity and the opportunity to build long‑standing client relationships.
What You Will Be DoingAs an Assistant Works Manager, you will be managing multiple construction sites across Lancashire and the northern region of the business. You will take ownership of site coordination, programme delivery, health & safety compliance and team leadership.
- Coordinating labour, plant and materials to ensure smooth and efficient site operations
- Preparing and monitoring contract programmes using Microsoft Project
- Ensuring all works meet quality standards and programme deadlines
- Leading, motivating and mentoring site teams
- Preparing pre‑construction information in line with CDM 2015 regulations
- Producing Risk Assessments and Method Statements
- Planning and forecasting plant and resource requirements
- Attending pre‑start meetings and delivering site briefings
- Ensuring full compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation
- Interpreting drawings, checking for inaccuracies and liaising with clients where required
- Protecting commercial interests while maintaining positive working relationships
- Supporting estimating teams with quotations when needed
- Attending weekly management coordination meetings
You will be expected to represent the company in a professional, courteous and efficient manner at all times.
What You Will BringTo be successful in this Assistant Works Manager role, you will ideally have:
- HNC / HND / Degree in a construction‑related subject
- Experience administering NEC contracts
- Practical knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015
- Strong project planning and financial monitoring skills
- Experience preparing and tracking programmes in Microsoft Project
- Excellent communication skills, both in person and remotely
- Proven people management and leadership ability
- Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office
- SMSTS
- CSCS Card
- Full UK driving licence
- £40,000 – £45,000 per annum (salary dependent on experience)
- Car allowance
- Mileage allowance

- 35 days holiday including bank holidays (7 days allocated to Christmas shutdown)
- Permanent contract following 3‑month probation
You will be working Monday to Friday, 07:30 – 17:00, with occasional weekend or night work required to meet programme needs.
