Position: Apprentice Field Service Engineer - Instrumentation (Water)

Overview

As a Level 3 Apprentice Field Service Engineer - Instrumentation (Water), you'll learn how to:

Responsibilities
  • Install, repair and maintain our process instrumentation, control and automation systems, ensuring our water assets are available and are working correctly and helping to keep services running smoothly for our customers
  • Work as part of a dedicated team focused on ensuring our plants continue to operate at maximum efficiency
  • Work with a wide range of equipment, identify faults and carry out routine maintenance, following the company's health and safety standards
  • Schedule maintenance activity and organise your workload effectively; work in line with water industry standards and regulatory requirements
  • Plan maintenance work with consideration for process safety, process risk assessments, and the environmental impact on water treatment or wastewater recycling
  • Identify and organise resources to complete tasks, considering process, cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact
  • Follow health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards, including PPE
  • Comply with sustainability principles and segregate waste for recycling, reuse or disposal
  • Select, check, store and maintain equipment and tools; restore the work area on completion of activity
  • Communicate in writing and record information (paper-based or electronic) such as job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers  documentation
  • Collect, interpret and use data with information and digital technology; comply with GDPR and cyber security regulations and policies
  • Apply equity, diversity and inclusion policies and practices; apply team working principles; apply continuous improvement techniques and devise suggestions for improvement
  • Communicate with and provide support, technical advice and updates to technical and non-technical colleagues and other stakeholders
  • Carry out and record learning and development activities
  • Comply with security procedures (e.g., site access, document classification, securing assets)
Skills and Disciplines
  • Electrical:
    Install, commission and decommission cabling and electrical equipment; apply electrical theories and principles; perform repair and maintenance; modify electrical circuits; inspect and test electrical installations; use electrical drawings; install different cable types and terminate to specifications; identify problems and investigate causes to determine solutions
  • ICA (Instrumentation, Control and Automation):
    Install, commission and decommission ICA equipment; configure instrumentation and control devices; calibrate and monitor open and closed loop systems; use tools and components for installation, repair and maintenance; configure field instrumentation, communication devices and equipment used in system and process control; apply repair and maintenance practices to ICA equipment; fault-find using diagnostic equipment; inspect and test ICA equipment; interpret design specifications, plans and drawings;

    calibrate ICA equipment; isolate equipment in preparation for maintenance with permits and safe isolation policies; test telemetry signals and configure outstations; use software to produce programs for control systems; assess condition of equipment and identify actions; analyze data to make evidence-based changes; identify problems and underlying causes
  • Mechanical:
    Carry out commissioning and decommissioning tasks on mechanical equipment; assemble, position and install mechanical equipment; disconnect and remove mechanical components; apply repair and maintenance techniques; use tools and resources for installation, repair and maintenance; isolate plant and equipment (permits, safe isolation, lock-off systems and depressurisation); inspect and test mechanical systems; fault-find with diagnostic equipment; monitor mechanical systems; interpret manufacturer s instructions, design specifications, plans and drawings;

    apply basic fabrication, welding and thermal cutting; apply bench fitting techniques; use machinery (lathes, pillar drills, milling machines, threading machines, mechanical saws) and apply mechanical theories and mathematics
  • Other duties:
    Work in line with water industry standards and regulatory requirements; identify and organise resources; follow safety procedures; comply with sustainability principles; discuss and implement continuous improvements; support stakeholders and colleagues
Qualifications and Requirements
  • GCSEs: 5 GCSEs minimum or equivalent (grade A-C or 9-4);
    Maths, English and a Science or Technology subject (grade A-C or 9-4)
  • Communication skills; problem solving; teamwork
  • Share additional relevant qualifications and industry experience; apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect existing knowledge
  • Willingness to participate in required training and development
