Job Summary / Basic Function

To direct staff engaged in campus and special event security, and perform related work.

Campus Security Authority

Per the Clery Act, the employee is required to report any crimes that he/she becomes aware of to the Clery Compliance Officer and must complete annual training prescribed by the Officer.

Shift Schedule

Variable shift schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift pay may be available for qualifying shift assignments.

Department Overview

Boisé State University’s Department of Public Safety is responsible for more than "people safety." In addition to university Security, the team includes the Emergency Management Department, Transportation, Parking, and Integrated Security Technology. Employees ensure the safety of everyone on campus through a variety of programs and supportive scheduling, competitive pay, and meaningful work.

Scope of Level

Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees, focusing primarily on supervisory activities. Oversees unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental and campus policies and manages accountability of campus resources.

Essential Functions
  • Engages in department problem‑solving for organizational issues; makes recommendations for efficiencies and advancement.
  • Provides leadership, management, and team building to assigned detail under chain‑of‑command.
  • Manages and monitors employees’ scheduling, work assignments, communication, and personnel development.
  • Evaluates and documents employee performance, providing regular feedback.
  • Displays the highest level of professionalism while performing all work duties.
  • Utilizes crime and call‑for‑service data to ensure evidence‑based patrol practices and address crime and livability issues.
  • Delivers high‑quality customer service to all department members and the campus community.
  • Plans and coordinates a variety of special administrative projects and assignments.
  • Exercises discretion when dealing with confidential matters and information.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to Public Safety Officers in the field.
  • Conducts personal actions as appropriate.
  • Oversees Public Safety Officer documentation, ensuring accuracy and grammatical correctness.
  • Works both independently and as a team with other department members and outside agency partners.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
  • Actively patrols campus by vehicle, foot, or bicycle; conducts building walk‑throughs.
  • Responds to emergency and non‑emergency calls for service, coordinating with emergency agencies as needed.
  • Investigates policy violations.
  • Prepares factual and accurate incident reports.
  • Represents the department and division in select working groups, committees, and partnerships.
  • Renews job knowledge by reading professional journals, participating in educational opportunities, and belonging to professional organizations.
  • Assists law enforcement agencies and other emergency responders with matters related to Boise State students, staff, and/or faculty.
  • Communicates security‑related needs and information to various Boise State departments, the Boise Police Department, and other non‑campus entities via person‑to‑person contact, telephone, e‑mail, etc.
  • May perform other duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and select best solutions to solve problems.
  • Ability to communicate information effectively.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote an effective operation.
  • Knowledge of the Department, its employees, and how the department functions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Good knowledge of self‑defense measures, first aid, and security problems and safety hazards related to a large complex of buildings and grounds.
  • Some knowledge of supervisory practices.
  • Experience performing investigations incidental to security activities, training others in security procedures, completing investigative reports, and making oral presentations.
  • A valid Driver’s License.
Salary and Benefits

Salary of $25.56–$29.00/hr, commensurate with experience.
