Housing & Residence Life (HRL) is a department that accommodates approximately 3,000 students and staff across 10 on‑campus living communities, which include traditional residence halls, suite‑style, and apartment‑style housing options. Our department is dedicated to supporting the academic and personal success of our residents. As we continue to grow and evolve, we aim to serve a broad range of students from across the region, including those from rural areas and those who are the first in their families to attend college.

Applies basic skills while developing some specialized skills in procedures, operations, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment appropriate to area of specialization; performs routine and/or repetitive tasks; limited decision making required; generally works under close supervision; has no or limited experience; work is performed from within specific limits of established procedures and/or defined instructions.

The Housing and Residence Life Custodian must:

• Perform heavy‑duty cleaning in locker rooms, classrooms, dormitories, and lavatories; clean, sanitize, and polish; dust, wash, sponge mop; sanitize, and shampoo furniture, woodwork, walls, windows, and glass items; clean shades and covers on light fixtures; remove waste and debris; select products and compounds for cleaning jobs and apply according to procedures or manufacturers' specifications; order supplies for custodial closets and stock custodial closets;
  
  sweep, strip, seal, and finish wood, linoleum, and other floors; wash windows; remove and prepare draperies for cleaning; remove adhesives, tiles, and carpet; refinish floors and prepare them for carpeting or special flooring; instruct temporary help.
• Operate heavy‑duty scrubbing, buffing, shampooing, vacuuming, and wet/dry pickup equipment; perform preventive maintenance; finish floors; use snow blowers, hysters, airlift platforms, dollies, and carts; use specialized sweepers; replace belts, brushes, and bearings; ensure floor and building area is secure; verify doors are locked and lights and appliances are off; report fire hazards and other emergencies.
• Perform a variety of duties to help ensure facilities operate smoothly, including setting up for special events, providing direction, and answering basic questions regarding events for patrons. Move furniture and similar heavy items; set up and climb ladders; shovel snow from walkways.

• Housing facility custodial duties include preparation of rooms and apartments for assignment and general ongoing daily custodial services for the common areas of the housing facilities. Regular and reliable attendance at work is required because of the need for these tasks to be performed on a daily basis. This position performs heavy‑duty cleaning practices to include: vacuuming, carpet extraction, floor cleaning and waxing, window cleaning, dusting, mopping, sweeping, vent cleaning, fixture cleaning, wall cleaning, and appliance cleaning (including stoves, ovens, and refrigerators).
  
  The position cleans and disinfects bathrooms on a daily basis, including but not limited to toilets, tubs, shower stalls, walls, sinks, and floors. Use of household and commercial cleaning/disinfecting agents is required for this position.
• Custodians are responsible for interior and exterior trash and recycling removal in addition to restocking paper products, soap, and sanitizers in common area bathrooms and lobby areas— all on a daily basis. This position performs minor maintenance and repair functions such as replacing light bulbs, screens, OCC batteries, smoke detector batteries, and air fresheners. Custodians will perform minor repairs on custodial equipment which they use regularly (listed in the section below), such as replacing belts, brushes and bearings.
