SummaryThe Inpatient/Transformation Recovery Center Mental Health nurse performs duties that improve patient and organizational outcomes by providing patient‑centered and recovery‑oriented care, maintaining self‑awareness while caring for patients with mental health conditions, and managing the clinical milieu.
Qualifications- English language proficiency (basic written and spoken English required).
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ACEN or CCNE) or completion of a accredited bridge program equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
- State licensed nurse with unrestricted registration in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C., or foreign nursing graduate with validated credentials.
- Preferred:
Minimum 1 year of mental health nursing experience. - Physical requirements:
- Light lifting under 15 lbs.
- Light carrying under 15 lbs.
- Reaching above shoulder.
- Use of fingers.
- Both hands required.
- Walking/standing 8‑12 hours.
- Repeated bending 1 hour.
- Both legs required.
- Rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
- Visual acuity: 20/20 in one eye, 20/40 in the other.
- Depth perception, color discrimination, and hearing (hearing aid may be permitted).
- Environmental factors:
Work closely with others and work independently. - Grade and Level criteria (see VA Qualification Standards for detailed level expectations).
- Facilitate shift reports and nurse‑led psycho educational groups.
- Use therapeutic communication and de‑escalation techniques, utilizing recovery‑oriented language.
- Actively participate in the mental health interdisciplinary treatment team, including environment of care rounds and crisis response.
- Document nursing assessments, plans of care, patient safety observations, and environmental safety rounds per facility policy.
- Maintain professional boundaries to protect patient vulnerabilities.
- Collaborate on the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Demonstrate performance and leadership that improves care for mental health patients.
- Provide constructive feedback to peers for improvement.
- Foster a safe and supportive environment conducive to professional development.
- Evaluate mental health outcomes for evidence‑based decision‑making and practice changes.
- Document mental health outcomes at the program or service level.
