Summary

Position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

• The Physician Assistant (PA) will manage and aid in the coordination of surgical operations within the Surgery Service, in addition to a full range of clinical responsibilities.
• Obtain medical histories and perform physical examinations.
• Provide and coordinate medical care for assigned patients in any care setting, including establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing care plans, and providing follow-up care.
• Evaluate outpatients to determine the need for further health care.
• Order diagnostic studies and other special tests, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, etc.
• Carry out health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education activities.
• Order or obtain laboratory specimens and order ancillary services (e.g., pharmacy, social services, physical medicine and rehabilitation therapies, prosthetic services).
• Order VA specialty service consults and initiate requests for non-VA medical care and consults in accordance with VHA and local facility policy and procedures.
• Order patient care supplies and write orders for or prescribe medications.
• Admit and discharge patients in consultation with, and on behalf of, the collaborating physician; obtain admission history, perform physical examinations, conduct patient rounds, document progress notes and summaries, and write patient orders.
• May be delegated the task of documenting the discharge summary; the collaborating physician must write a discharge note or co-sign the discharge summary in accordance with Joint Commission standards.
• Maintain other patient record entries by PAs (e.g., medical histories, physical examinations, progress notes, service consults, Compensation and Pension evaluations, patient orders) as required by Federal law, VA policy, or accrediting bodies.
• Obtain and document informed consent for treatments and procedures for which the PA is responsible; ensure the Scope of Practice authorizes the consent and participation in the procedure.
• Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
• Perform on-call duties with first call for all surgical specialties alongside an on-call physician for each specialty.
