Job Description

This position provides comprehensive eye care for both children and adults, including management of ocular diseases and vision disorders, in a community‑based, primary care environment. It offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by improving access to high‑quality eye care for underserved populations while working collaboratively with other primary care providers and allied health professionals.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all diagnostic testing and therapeutic treatments listed in Chapter 463, Florida Statute (Optometry Practice Act)
  • Provide comprehensive eye examinations and vision care for pediatric and adult patients
  • Diagnose and manage ocular and visual conditions such as refractive errors, amblyopia, binocular vision disorders, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and anterior/posterior segment conditions within the optometric scope of practice
  • Prescribe and fit glasses, contact lenses, and other visual aids as appropriate
  • Provide patient education on eye health, disease prevention, and vision care
  • Manage ocular emergencies and refer patients to outside specialists when necessary
  • Collaborate with primary care providers and other HCD CHC staff to ensure coordinated, whole‑person care
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant medical records in accordance with HCD CHC standards
  • Participate in quality improvement, health education, and community outreach activities as assigned
  • Review incoming reports (e.g., x‑ray, hospital and specialty reports), sign, date, and follow up in a timely manner
  • Participate in utilization review, quality assurance, provider meetings, and other clinical meetings; assist in updating protocols and principles of practice as requested
  • Assist in outside medical public relations functions
  • Adhere to UDS productivity standards and meet at least the minimum requirement
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete medical records, completing proper coding requirements and various forms as required; participate in quality assurance and related activities; provide oversight of optometry technician or medical assistants
  • Participate in after‑hours “on‑call” patient phone‑call coverage on a rotating basis
Customer Service

As a patient care facility, the HCD CHC and its staff are responsible for providing high‑quality internal and external customer service. The Optometrist must demonstrate a focus on customer service and the ability to attain high levels of customer satisfaction by providing appropriate leadership. Maintaining positive relationships with customers both internally and externally is essential.

Communication

The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to share information in a timely manner, both verbally and in writing, keeping peers, colleagues, and staff appropriately informed. The position also requires interpersonal skills such as effective listening, appropriate use of style and language for the audience, and productive processing of information. The position is expected to process information in an analytical fashion and be able to communicate findings and results effectively, including effective verbal presentation and written analysis adapting language and terminology to the needs of the audience.

Teamwork

The Optometrist has responsibility over clinical care as assigned by the Medical Director. The Optometrist must be adept at dealing with varying personality types, patients, families, physicians, peers, supervisors, and external parties, and must be able to independently determine the timing and manner of presentation in which each situation is addressed.

The Optometrist must possess the ability to focus on improving health outcomes by encouraging innovation and using best practices. Ingenuity and strong analytical skills are essential, and the Optometrist must be able to effectively balance priorities.

The Optometrist must possess the ability to identify and implement quality processes to meet identified health outcomes. They must stay abreast of current techniques, methods, and skills and regularly measure adherence to quality clinical measures.
