Overview
Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, performs laboratory testing in various sections of the laboratory, performs control testing and initiates troubleshooting steps for problem areas. The following statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered a detailed description of all work requirements.
Responsibilities- Consult with testing personnel, testing supervisors, assistant lab manager or lab manager for assistance in resolving technical problems, decision making and areas of question.
- Perform testing on blood, urine, and other body fluids.
- Perform testing in any one or combination of laboratory sections following test methods defined in the procedure manual.
- Process Microbiology specimens and interpret test results.
- Prepare specimens and route them to appropriate reference labs for all testing not performed in-house.
- Verify test results in computer utilizing Outstanding Orders Reports and worksheets and respond appropriately to Delta and Critical (Panic) values.
- Calculate and tabulate results and prepare reports of observations.
- Assist in keeping files and records up-to-date and orderly.
- Ensure procedure manuals are orderly and report discrepancies in procedures.
- Consult with appropriate personnel regarding difficult analyses or abnormal findings.
- Perform quality control and instrument check procedures with appropriate documentation.
- Perform routine and unscheduled preventative maintenance on instruments.
- Participate in proficiency testing surveys.
- Report supplies usage and assist in maintaining an adequate stock of supplies.
- Receive chain-of-custody specimens and, when applicable, collect chain-of-custody specimens for cause.
- Participate in training new employees and MLT students.
- Perform duties in other departments, including venipuncture, checking charges, scanning, indexing, printing results, as necessary to assure maximum productivity and workflow.
- Maintain good relations with patients, medical staff, co-workers, other departments and physician offices/homes that use our services.
- A.S. degree in MLT or B.S. degree in Medical Technology, or in chemical, physical or biological science with clinical training in a school approved by ASCP; or equivalent.
- ASCP certification or registration preferred.
- Competency in components of laboratory technology, as appropriate.
- Good general physical condition.
- Verbal ability to communicate with patients and other clientele; ability to convey instructions and other information.
- Numerical ability to calculate by formula.
- Form perception and visual acuity appropriate to perform specific lab tests.
- Dependable and reliable.
