Tool and Die Maker - Grade III​/II​/2nd Shift

Summary

Employee is responsible for all repair activities as assigned by Tooling Manager or Tool Room Shift Leader.

• Inventory of punches and other expendables.
• Layout dies, fixtures, and parts.
• Designing and building of fixtures and small dies.
• Must be able to read part prints.
• Teaching and/or instructing toolmakers with lower classifications the following: techniques, methods of operating equipment.
• Train and manage apprentices.
• Try-out dies and assist in securing PPAP approval.
• Tig weld trim steels and heat treat tool steels if necessary.
• Estimate and quote hours and costs.
• Run all tool-room equipment including mill, lathe, grinder, surface grinder, saw drill press and Mig/Tig welders as necessary.
• Trouble shoot sheet metal dies in the presses as well as in the tool room.
• Use layout tools and equipment, i.e.: height gages, Jo-Blocks, indicators, micrometers, and calipers.
• Clean up assigned work areas including your work bench.
• Complete all documents such as job cards, p.m. logbook, requisitions, etc.
• Operate cranes for trucks and lift trucks to move dies.
• Inform Inspection at end of each shift or at the end of the job about any excess parts (scrap/questionable) or raw material at the press or machine so it can be disposed of in the proper manner.
• Observes and complies with all company, federal and state safety and environmental policies and practices.
• Develops strong working knowledge of all relevant quality policies, procedures, and work instructions associated with the successful performance on this job.
• Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe personal work area and shared facility space.
• Stop production at any work center, as necessary, if safety is being jeopardized, or to correct quality problems. Any work stoppage must be reported immediately to the production shift supervisor, and quality problems to inspection or the Quality Manager.
• Responsible for all other duties assigned.

• Good eyesight and health to permit full time employment and attendance within the company absenteeism guidelines.
• Ability to manipulate up to 90 lbs.
• Be able to place or position parts on surface plates or other inspection equipment.
• Be able to manipulate small parts for sorting and inspection.
• Must meet the required standards for quality and quantity of work.
• Able to do general cleaning and housekeeping tasks to keep the work area clean.
• Be able to learn how to use micrometers, calipers, profilometers, height gages, dial indicators, gage blocks and other equipment.
• Be able to learn English and metric measuring systems and be able to convert between them.
• Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
• Must follow all safety requirements.
• Know and understand Safety Data Sheet requirements.
• Accurately complete all documents such as job cards, etc. as required.
• Properly care for all company property and tools issued.
• Be able to lift, bend, twist, walk and climb as required to perform the job.
• Must pass the pre-employment drug screening.
• Must be able to work overtime as needed.
• Must have own die makers tools.
• Must be able to run all tool-room equipment.
• Must have good troubleshooting abilities.
• Must have Journeymen Tool and Die card or certificate or proof of nine (9) years working in the tool and die trade building and designing fixtures, dies and gages on time and within the quoted hours.
• Must be able to layout dies, fixtures, and parts.
• Must be able to try-out a die and assist in securing PPAP approval.
• Must be able to estimate and quote hours and costs.
• Aids supervisor in identifying training needs. Attends and participates in all scheduled training and education programs identified for this position.

• High School Diploma or GED
• 4-year apprenticeship with minimum 576 classroom hours
• Employee must be able to verbally explain company Quality Policy and ISO Quality Management Systems.

• Basic competency in high school math.

• Seeks guidance as necessary for performance of duties. Demonstrates good judgment in investigating problems. Respects confidentiality of company, customer, and personal information.

• Maintains a positive attitude and cooperative working relationship with all Managers and employees. Consistently demonstrates the ability to tactfully handle difficult situations.

• Performs all duties in an independent manner with little or no supervision. Recognizes and assists others as needed.

• Must provide proper notification and advance notice for non-emergency absences.
• Medical conditions must not jeopardize normal job/functional requirements.

• Manufacturing environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical equipment. The noise level in the shop is usually loud and the temperature may vary greatly. All necessary safety equipment must be used when in the shop.
