About the RoleOur client, a global leader in retail and store technology innovation, is seeking a Senior Advanced Software Engineering Manager (Cloud / Native Mobile) to lead a critical pillar of in-store technology supporting hundreds of physical locations nationwide.
This leader will oversee store systems (excluding pharmacy, pickup, and core POS), including ownership of the self-checkout platform and emerging initiatives in RFID, IoT, and computer vision.
This is a high-impact leadership role focused on modernization, cloud-native transformation, and operational scalability across a large distributed environment. The ideal candidate is a player-coach with a strong application development background (cloud and/or mobile) who now operates at a senior engineering leadership level.
What You’ll Do- Lead and develop 6 senior-level engineering leaders across a hybrid FTE + contractor organization (~150 FTEs / 300–400 contractors overall ecosystem)
- Drive modernization from legacy systems toward Kubernetes-based, cloud-native architecture
- Own and evolve the self-checkout platform across stores
- Guide adoption of RFID, IoT ecosystems, and computer vision initiatives (line monitoring, inventory visibility, staffing optimization)
- Partner with cloud providers on architectural direction, framework standardization, and technology selection
- Influence technology standards and modernization strategy beyond direct reporting lines
- Collaborate closely with data teams supporting inventory, promotions, and store performance
- Balance innovation with operational reliability and cost discipline
- Ensure delivery of complex programs on time and within budget
- Direct ownership of highly visible, revenue-impacting store technology platforms
- Leading-edge initiatives in RFID and computer vision
- Enterprise-level scope with strong executive visibility
- Competitive compensation including bonus and equity
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related STEM field (or equivalent experience)
- 8+ years leading technical teams, including hybrid FTE and contractor environments
- 5+ years supporting eCommerce, retail systems, or high-transaction platforms
- Proven experience leading large-scale technology initiatives and organizational transformation
- Strong technical foundation with hands‑on background in cloud and/or mobile development
- Experience operating as a player‑coach while leading senior managers
- Deep understanding of Agile software development practices
- Strong financial acumen with understanding of total cost of technology
- Demonstrated ability to influence beyond direct reporting lines
- Executive‑level communication and presentation skills
- Experience delivering complex programs on time and within budget
- Comfort managing diverse technical disciplines across distributed teams
- Prior hands‑on software development experience in Angular, Java/Spring Boot, or similar modern stacks
- Experience with Azure cloud architecture (strongly preferred)
- Exposure to Kubernetes, Terraform, Redis, SQL‑based systems
- Experience in IoT, networking, or edge/retail environments
- Background leading modernization or platform evolution initiatives
- Experience in high‑growth or transformation environments
