Job Overview
Fairview Health Services is looking for a full‑time Medical Laboratory Technician to work at M Health Fairview Clinic – Bloomington. The position is an evening shift, 12:00 pm‑8:30 pm, Monday‑Friday. It includes a weekend rotation; staff will work either a Saturday or Sunday every five weeks at one of the South‑region UC locations (M Health Fairview Clinic – Oxboro, M Health Fairview Clinic – Lakeville, M Health Fairview Clinic – Eagan, or M Health Fairview Clinic – Edina).
The technician may be trained to work at other SE clinic locations as needed.
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) provides quality, proficient and professional laboratory services to diverse populations within an ambulatory health‑care environment. The MLT performs waived or moderate‑complexity testing following standard operating procedures (SOP), correlates data‑based knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions affecting test results, and performs quality‑control procedures within established parameters. The MLT may also be involved in specimen collection, safe and secure specimen handling, workflow efficiency, scheduling tests, and providing results as appropriate.
The MLT works independently under general supervision.
- Follow established guidelines to obtain specimens, perform waived, moderate, or high‑complexity testing, and report results.
- Collect and process biological specimens with appropriate technique following SOP.
- Verify patient and specimen identities and assess specimen integrity.
- Determine priority of specimen testing and procurement.
- Execute a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic tests, including Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, Serology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Urinalysis, Phlebotomy, and EKG, as defined by CLIA ’88 and SOP.
- Operate laboratory instrumentation and information systems according to procedure.
- Perform and document maintenance procedures, and maintain adequate supplies.
- Recognize problems and take appropriate measures to resolve them, including seeking assistance and consulting supervisors when needed.
- Initiate proper safety or emergency responses.
- Evaluate testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention, determining normal parameters, age‑specific reference ranges, and clinically relevant correlations.
- Take action to recheck abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results and communicate abnormal and critical results directly to caregivers.
- Resolve in congruent results by obtaining information from caregivers.
- Maintain Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement, and Laboratory Compliance programs by documenting deviations, reagent and test kit checks, and QC trends; take corrective action and consult supervisors as needed.
- Participate in performance‑improvement programs by collecting data, reviewing results, and implementing action steps.
- Collaborate with laboratory customers to promote satisfaction.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory agency policies.
- Orient and mentor new employees and students, covering routine and complex testing methodology, instrumentation, and information systems.
- Check work prior to release, complete training checklists and evaluations, and report progress and problems to supervisors or managers.
- Associate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field (including lab practicum) or equivalent, qualifying as moderate‑complexity testing personnel per CLIA ’88.
- Associate or higher degree from an accredited institution in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology; diploma with field of study listed or transcript provided.
- Associate or higher degree or 60 semester hours from an accredited institution with 6 semester hours in biology and 6 semester hours in chemistry; transcript provided.
- Completion of a 50‑week U.S. military medical laboratory training course plus an associate or higher degree or 60 semester hours with 6 biology and 6 chemistry hours; transcript provided.
