Overview

RECREATIONAL SPORTS (BL-RECS-IUBLA) Job posting for the Office of Student Life. The Office focuses on building a foundation to ensure every student’s Indiana University experience is positive, safe, healthy, and meaningful. The staff help students navigate their time at IU, providing tools to be successful. Students are the priority, and their health, safety, and well-being are the core mission.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for developing and executing the Recreational Sports Outreach program in the Residence Halls.
  • Establishes a personal engagement plan for internal and campus-wide events, coordinates a summer program targeting incoming freshmen attending new student orientation, and assists in the development and delivery of a department-wide relational service initiative.
  • Hires and trains all part-time staff within the unit.
  • Supervises 1–2 program assistants, 12 outreach assistants, and 15 student orientation sneak peek leaders. This position reports to the Director of Outreach and Relational Service.
  • Develops strategy for connecting with students living in residence halls to Recreational Sports.
  • Coordinates partnership with Residence Hall Association (RHA) and proposes funding bills at General Assembly meetings held twice a year.
  • Works with other RS program areas to track and communicate use of all funding sources throughout the year.
  • Presents to the RHA executive board, sharing analysis of budget and participation to demonstrate continued effectiveness of monetary support of RHA through the RHA Recreational Sports Fund for Intramural Sports, Jill Behrman 5K and swim sessions.
  • Establishes personal engagement plans for internal events and campus-wide tabling opportunities. Coordinates with campus partners to reserve space. Determines needed materials and prepares them or submits work tickets as needed.
  • Evaluates shift reports from hourly employees to assess the effectiveness of outreach locations, times, and activities and adjusts as needed.
  • Provides oversight and innovation to Rec Connect, the RS department’s mechanism for helping foster and create communities centered around activities.
  • Hires, trains, directly supervises and assesses approximately 14 Outreach Assistants each school year who will assist in executing department initiatives across campus. Meets with staff bi-weekly to strategize upcoming goals and educate staff on RS programs and services.
  • Organizes, hires, and trains summer orientation staff (22 staff). Strategize and coordinate with the Office of First Year Experience, full-time professional RS staff and program sponsors to connect with and educate approximately 9000 incoming freshmen about Recreational Sports.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and assessment of the department-wide relational service initiative.
  • Works in collaboration with the Director to monitor budget throughout the year — closely tracking hourly staff weekly hours, tracking equipment inventory, and submitting proposals for new equipment as part of the end-of-year budget process.
  • Assists unit director with special events such as Rec Fest (3000 students), Thursday Night Lights, Fall Hourly Staff Training, Open Houses, and other events as assigned.
  • Serves as an on-site professional staff member during assigned shifts throughout operational hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides day-to-day operational management of recreational programming staff.
  • Establishes short-term operational objectives.
  • Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates in and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
  • Provides direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impacts and is held accountable for the performance of the team and/or assigned staff.
