RECREATIONAL SPORTS (BL-RECS-IUBLA)
The Office of Student Life is focused on building a strong foundation to ensure every student's Indiana University (IU) experience is positive, safe, healthy, and meaningful. Staff within multiple departments of the Office of Student Life aim to help students navigate their time at IU, providing the tools they need to be successful in school and after graduation. Students are our priority, and their health, safety, and overall well-being are our core mission.
Recreational Sports is part of the Office of Student Life, which is dedicated to supporting students health, safety, and success throughout their IU experience. The Recreational Sports mission is to connect, inform, and inspire individuals to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Serving over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members annually, we offer various programs across 2 multipurpose facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, adventure spaces, and more.
Our team includes 46 professional staff and over 800 student employees.

Instructional team members include Personal Trainers, Tennis Instructors, and Group Exercise Instructors. Staff in these roles create a positive and motivating environment for students, staff, and community members across our facilities. They also play a key role in supporting healthy lifestyles and building community through movement.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- All Positions
- Deliver high-quality instruction by providing safe, effective, and engaging sessions tailored to participant needs, whether in group formats, 1-on-1 training, or sport-specific lessons.
- Arrive early to sessions, set up appropriately, and begin and end on time to ensure a professional and organized experience.
- Track attendance, session details, and participant progress using approved systems and reporting tools.
- Respond promptly to emails and client assignments, submit required reports, and maintain open communication with supervisors and team members.
- Participate in staff development by attending required meetings, trainings, workshops, and performance reviews to stay informed and aligned with departmental standards.
- Follow all Campus Recreational Sports guidelines, including safety protocols, risk management procedures, and role-specific manuals or playbooks.
- Exhibit consistent punctuality, accountability, and respectful conduct in all interactions and responsibilities.
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere that encourages participant engagement, skill development, and enjoyment across all instructional settings.
- Group Exercise Instructors
- Design and lead choreographed group fitness classes (Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, cycling, dance, strength, etc.) that accommodate varied fitness levels.
- Select music that enhances the workout experience and aligns with the format and pace of the session.
- Communicate effectively and model professionalism to create a consistent, open, and supportive environment.
- Follow the Group Exercise Playbook, including specific operational tasks like radio checks and shift reports.
- Mentor new instructors and occasionally substitute for other leaders.
- Personal Trainers
- Design workouts that are effective, engaging, educational, and tailored to each client s needs.
- Gain hands-on experience in fitness coaching and being part of a supportive, health-focused community.
- Conduct 1-on-1 training sessions focused on individualized fitness goals and wellness coaching.
- Perform fitness assessments and track client progress over time.
- Develop customized workout plans based on client needs and objectives.
- Communicate directly with the Assistant Director of Fitness/Wellness regarding client updates and concerns.
- Tennis Instructors
- Guide players of all ages and skill levels to develop their skills through fun, hands-on sessions and clinics using the prescribed curriculum that is aligned with program standards.
- Share your passion for tennis and learn and grow your skills while working with our United States Tennis Association (USTA) certified instructors.
- Teach tennis lessons in private, semi-private, and group formats for all skill levels.
- Collaborate with the Head Tennis Professional to ensure instructional consistency and technique refinement.
