IU Dining supports the IU community and our guests by serving fresh, delicious, sustainably sourced cuisine in welcoming dining halls and eateries. Retail dining runs food operations for cafes and campus stores at IU Bloomington, also managing relationships with external businesses that serve food on campus and vendors whose retail products are carried ail dining staff work closely with the teams in residential and Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) dining to ensure consistent procurement of products that match student preferences and dietary needs.
ResponsibilitiesDepartment-Specific Responsibilities
- Leads daily operations by coordinating and administrating the activities of the dining location.
- Oversees and monitors the budget of multiple units along with inventory control of those units.
- Coordinates special events and summer conferences.
- Accountable for the financial results of the units.
- Leads Assistant Manager and Sous Chef to supervise and direct full/part-time staff and student employees with preparation, order taking, and delivery of food.
- Conducts regular performance evaluations and supports staff through coaching and mentoring.
- Assists in long-term planning for the dining units including menu development, sustainability efforts, and operational improvements.
- Communicates regularly with the upper management to provide updates on operations, challenges, and achievements.
- Oversees recruitment, onboarding, training, and professional development of staff to ensure efficiency and compliance with safety and service protocols.
- General Responsibilities
- Manages and oversees dining operation and activities.
- Trains staff in methods and procedures of customer service, food preparation, and proper use of equipment.
- Oversees staff responsible for placing food orders and ensures the dining facility has the necessary resources and supplies to operate effectively.
- Conducts regular inspections of the kitchen, dining room, and other food service facilities to ensure compliance with government, safety, and sanitation requirements.
- Works with Food Services Leader(s) to prepare short and long-term fiscal budgets.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor's degree in culinary, hospitality, or related field
Work Experience
- 2 years of food service experience
Preferred
- 1 year of management experience in relevant field
Licenses and Certificates
- Food Safety (Serv Safe) certification within 180 days from date of hire
Skills
- Ability to lead/manage others
- Demonstrates customer service skills
- Demonstrates time management and priority setting skills
- Ability to influence internal and/or external constituents
- Ability to inspire staff and deliver constructive feedback
- Knowledge of professional cooking principles
- Ability to learn and use point-of-sale systems, and other university software such as TIME and FIS
- Knowledge of current applicable food codes and other relevant safety regulations
This position requires tasks typically associated with back-of-the-house food service work. It involves periods of both sedentary work and times of frequent movement about the workspace. Using commercial kitchen equipment and tools, moving supplies or objects weighing up to 50 pounds and effective communication skills are necessary. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Location& Compensation
Bloomington, Indiana
$47,000 annually
Shift times vary according to business needs and will include days through the week as well as weekends (as necessary) to meet operational demands. Management reserves the right to adjust work hours to accommodate special meals and events.
