Family Gardening Program Instructor

Hilltop Garden and Nature Center is a 5‑acre public garden site located within the Indiana University campus. The Hilltop Family Gardening Program provides a garden‑themed learning environment for families and students to learn and work together through gardening activities.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare and lead four 90‑minute weekly program sessions.
  • Provide a safe learning environment.
  • Guide and support families in their garden plots.
  • Perform general garden maintenance (seeding, planting, weeding, mulching, pruning, harvesting, watering, fertilizing, composting, pest management, removal of dead plants and debris).
  • Assist with organizing tasks for assistant instructor and volunteers.
  • Assist with school field trips, summer camps, Hilltop events and programs.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (HSED or GED).
  • Experience facilitating learning experiences for children.
Preferred Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, Environmental Management, Youth Development, Recreational Therapy, Parks, Recreation and the Outdoors, Public Health, or similar.
Preferred Credentials
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
Skills
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and complete repetitive gardening tasks.
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to help children and adults learn basic gardening skills, focusing on organic and sustainable methods.
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve and make decisions quickly.
Preferred Skills
  • Musical, theatrical, and arts and crafts experience.
Work Schedule

Part‑time, 10–18 hours per week. Requires availability for two weekday evenings and Saturday mornings. Works from March 2, 2026 to October 17, 2026.
