Description
The Water Plant Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining water treatment equipment to ensure the supply of clean and safe drinking water to communities and industrial facilities. The operator monitors processes, performs routine maintenance tasks, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards and the uninterrupted operation of the facility.
DutiesPrimary
- Conducts regular tests of water samples to assess parameters such as pH, turbidity, chlorine levels, and bacterial contamination; takes corrective actions as needed.
- Monitors and controls equipment such as pumps, valves, filters, and chemical feed systems to regulate the flow of water through the treatment process.
- Operates various equipment and systems including sludge de‑watering, total organic carbon analyzer, chemical feeders, and disinfection.
- Performs routine maintenance on equipment and machinery.
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots equipment malfunctions, coordinating with maintenance staff for repairs and replacements.
- Maintains accurate records of plant operations, including water flow rates, chemical usage, and test results.
- Responds promptly to emergencies such as equipment failures, power outages, or water quality issues.
- Works closely with other plant operators, maintenance technicians, and supervisors to coordinate daily operations and support teamwork.
- Notifies supervisor of any issues with processes or equipment.
- Prioritizes a safe work environment.
Secondary
- Assists in completing and submitting laboratory test forms to appropriate state agencies.
- Completes light housekeeping duties and outside of the plant.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to obtain an Operator in Training (O.I.T.) within 18 months of hire.
- Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.
- Moderate physical effort required for setup and operation of equipment.
- Exposed to weather conditions and laboratory chemical hazards.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Maintains frequent contact with plant superintendents, department co‑workers for safety and public service.
