Overview

ENGAGED LEARNING & RESEARCH AC (BL-ELRA-IUBLA). Learning at Indiana University (IU) Bloomington goes far beyond the classroom. Through Experiential Learning Activities (ELAs), students apply their knowledge in real-world settings that challenge and inspire them. With the support of dedicated mentors and a community of peers, each ELA can lead to new and exciting pathways that help students build skills both within their major and beyond, preparing them to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

The Director of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Living Learning Center (LLC) provides strategic leadership for a newly reimagined residential community designed to support approximately 100 first-year students interested in STEM. The Director oversees all aspects of program development, student support, and community engagement, ensuring that the STEM LLC continues to demonstrate significant impact on first year retention and student success while delivering high-impact experiential learning opportunities aligned with the IU Bloomington (IUB) 2030 Strategic Plan.

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Student Programs, the Director ensures that all programming aligns with Indiana University s standards for experiential learning while strengthening student success through academic engagement, mentorship, and community-building.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Work in close partnership with the IU Undergraduate Research office and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) leadership to expand access to research and other experiential learning opportunities. This includes providing essential programming and logistical support to the expanding STEM Summer Research Program and contributing to other major VPUE experiential learning initiatives.
  • Oversee daily operations of the STEM LLC, including community-building initiatives, academic programming, staff supervision, budget management, and collaboration with Residential Programs and Services.
  • Develop, implement, and assess programming that fosters early engagement in undergraduate research, mentorship, and academic success for first-year STEM students.
  • Provide individualized outreach, advising, and support to help students navigate research pathways and connect with high-impact learning experiences.
  • Recruit highly motivated students with strong STEM interests through strategic marketing and participation in campus recruitment activities.
  • Manage the application, selection, and notification process for new and returning LLC residents in coordination with IU Housing and Residence Life.
  • Teach a 1-credit professional development course for STEM LLC residents in alignment with campus-wide first-year seminar efforts.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student leaders and peer tutors who support LLC programming.
  • Cultivate a network of faculty and staff mentors to engage residents in professional development and networking events.
  • Lead assessment, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts to demonstrate impact on student engagement, retention, and academic achievement.
  • Provide support for IU Undergraduate Research Office.
    • Partner closely with the IU Undergraduate Research (IUUR) office to advance and support the STEM Summer Research Program and other major experiential learning initiatives.
    • Collaborate with IUUR staff to expand access to research opportunities, particularly for first-year students, through outreach events, workshops, and student advising.
  • Demonstrate necessary knowledge bases.
    • Maintain advanced knowledge of student development theory, experiential learning practices, and effective strategies for assessment and retention, including through active engagement in national and regional professional organizations.
    • Stay current on university policies and procedures, particularly those related to student residential life and academic support.
    • Build and sustain collaborative relationships with units involved in STEM education and housing, including the Office of Student Life, LLC directors, faculty fellows, and others.
