ARTS & SCIENCES; DEAN (BL-ARSD-IUBLA). The Office of Undergraduate Retention and Student Success in the College of Arts and Sciences (the College) serves approximately 14,000 undergraduate students pursuing degrees and more than 250 major, minor, and certificate programs in 3 disciplinary areas within the core College and 3 schools:
The Media School, the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design, and the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. The Office implements all College academic policies, academic progress reviews, and multiple petition processes for students in the College. Our team focuses on retention by supporting student success and providing different levels of intervention to students in academic difficulty.

- Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Data and outreach: create and manage the office's data needs; provide expert analysis of data related to student retention and success to establish strategic goals, with emphasis on 1st– to 3rd-semester retention and 4-year and 6-year graduation rates.
- Research current student success trends and tools; recommend strategies and initiatives that support retention, success, and timely degree completion.
- Analyze historical data to identify indicators that suggest outreach or intervention to enhance the student experience and keep students on pace to graduation.
- Use data to develop campaigns and lead outreach to students who are academically at risk.
- Student Support: apply knowledge of retention strategies to assist students in developing strategic decision-making skills; counsel students about liberal arts education and major fit; develop strategies to meet academic and personal needs; connect students to College and campus resources as needed.
- Collaboration and Accountability: identify advising concerns and barriers to success, propose solutions, develop training programs, and conduct interventions to improve collaboration with other student-facing offices; consider student petitions impartially according to College policies; apply problem-solving skills and sound judgment for appropriate exception handling; provide guidance on appeals processes; serve on campus committees; liaise with College and campus partners working toward student success and 4-year graduation goals (e.g., 21st Century Scholars).
Responsibilities
- Develops and distributes reports on enrollment, year-over-year retention, progress toward degree completion, and graduation for leaders in enrollment management and student services; maintains historical trend reports.
- Serves on committees and collaborates with student services staff to understand the full student life cycle and barriers to retention and graduation.
- Develops and implements retention programs, initiatives, and targeted communications to improve outcomes.
- Performs targeted outreach to at-risk students and connects them with resources to navigate barriers to completion.
- Evaluates enrollment data to determine effectiveness of processes; partners with academic departments and offices to realize enrollment goals.
- Determines enrollment demand and advises on course offerings and capacity considerations.
- Performs industry research and recommends process improvements aligned with best practices.
- May provide guidance to lower-level Student Retention Specialists.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum may be substituted for work experience, and vice versa.
Education- Required:
Bachelor's degree in business, public policy, or related field. - Preferred:
Master's degree in a liberal arts discipline.
- Required:
5 years in enrollment management, admissions, student services, higher education, or related field. - Preferred: 5 years of professional experience in an advising and/or administrative role in a university setting; experience using data to make recommendations in a higher-education context.
