RECREATIONAL SPORTS (BL-RECS-IUBLA) The Office of Student Life focuses on building a strong foundation to ensure every student's Indiana University (IU) experience is positive, safe, healthy, and meaningful. The Office of Student Life staff and multiple departments aim to help students navigate their time at IU, providing the tools they need to be successful in school and after graduation. Recreational Sports is part of the Office of Student Life, dedicated to supporting students' health, safety, and success throughout their IU experience. The Recreational Sports mission is to connect, inform, and inspire individuals to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Serving over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members annually, we offer programs across 2 multipurpose facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, adventure spaces, and more.

The Trip Leader provides support for assigned adventure trips based on certifications and experience.
Responsibilities- Safely lead groups through various outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, rafting, or canoeing
- Assist with pre-trip logistics, including route planning, transportation, and equipment checks
- Ensure all participants are engaged, having fun, and feeling safe throughout the trip
- Handle participant questions, concerns, and conflicts professionally while providing a positive and welcoming environment
- Teach necessary outdoor skills, such as camp craft, navigation, and wilderness ethics
- Follow all emergency and risk management procedures and be prepared to respond to difficult situations
- Complete pre- and post-trip paperwork, track expenses, and assist with trip promotion
- Oversee group dynamics and safety
- Provide customer service
- Report to the Skill Development Coordinator
- Required Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University
- Outdoor education experience that could include outdoor trip leading, environmental education, experiential education or related experience
- Experience supporting recreational or outdoor program logistics (e.g., trip planning, workshop coordination)
- Outdoor Skills Certifications (Leave No Trace, American Canoe Association, American Mountain Guide Association, National Outdoor Leadership School, Bike Instructor Certification Program, Wilderness Education Association or certifications from other entities that address these skills or equivalent experience)
- Wilderness First Aid First Responder or American Red Cross First Aid/CPR
- Strong leadership and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication
- Technical proficiency in 1 or more outdoor activity areas
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines, and prioritize tasks effectively
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook)
These positions require sitting and maintaining attention for long periods of time and frequently moving about the workspace. Positions require working both indoors and outdoors and ability to move objects up to 50 pounds with assistance. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
