Applications Engineer

Job Overview

Responsible for processing, tool layouts, and programming of CNC multi‑axis machines.

• Develop proposals and detailed proposals for new parts based on customer prints.
• Determine appropriate machine tool, material, cycle time, parts per hour, tooling cost, subsequent operations, and outside services needed.
• Document processing steps, create tool layouts, and develop “offset prints” to specify tooling requirements and button setup instructions.
• Prepare a detailed tool‑layout sheet that identifies all tooling and hardware required for a specific job on a specific machine, including inventory numbers for perishable tooling.
• Create color‑coded offset prints to communicate how each tool affects geometry, enabling operators to keep parts within specifications.
• Maintain and update layouts and offset prints to reflect process improvements and equipment changes.
• Program CNC machines and design machining processes, including sequence of operations.
• Select machine tools, cutting tools, and work holding fixtures suitable for the job.
• Choose machining processes such as drill, ream, bore, burnish, broach, single‑point thread, tap, roll thread, polygon turn, transmit mill, polar interpolation, etc.
• Establish machining parameters (spindle speed, feed, depth of cut) based on material and tooling geometry.
• Write CNC programs using Partmaker or Espirit CAD/CAM and create programs for turning centers, Swiss type centers, and multi‑spindle machines.
• Set up part files in the Zoller tool presetter for all Index and Star ST38 processes.
• Train personnel on machine set‑up, operation, and repair for all Index and CNC equipment.
• Continuously improve cycle time and process capability across all CNC machines.
• Perform machine set‑ups when backlogs occur or when a set‑up person is absent.
• Set up and prove out new processes and complex parts.
• Engage in corrective action meetings with quality control to address process inefficiencies and quality concerns.
• Troubleshoot and repair machinery, including consulting machine manufacturers when needed.
• Apply Siemens Step 7 PLC programming knowledge to diagnose machine logic issues.
• Source and secure economical replacement components for machine repair.
• Coordinate repair and remanufacturing of mechanical and electronic machine components.
• Manufacture repair and replacement parts for machine tools.

• 3–5 years of machine programming experience.
• Strong knowledge of machining processes and CNC machines.
• Ability to read blueprints, use GDT, inspection equipment, and tooling.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
