If so, Blairgowrie High School is seeking a Principal Teacher of English to spearhead the exciting development and redesign of our English curriculum, driving innovative approaches to learning for all our young people. In this pivotal role, you will take the strategic lead on literacy across the school, making a lasting impact on the lives of young people and shaping their futures.

You ll work at the heart of a supportive, positive team of middle leaders, collaborating to design new pathways and champion curriculum change during a period of transformation.

As Principal Teacher of English, you will:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership of the English department, ensuring excellent learning experiences across BGE and Senior Phase.
  • Lead the planning, delivery and continuous improvement of English in line with Curriculum for Excellence and SQA qualifications.
  • Drive whole school literacy improvement, supporting staff across all faculties to embed effective literacy strategies.
  • Line manage, develop and support staff within the English department, promoting a culture of collaboration and professional learning.
  • Use data, tracking and assessment information to raise attainment and close the poverty related attainment gap.
  • Contribute to school leadership, improvement planning and wider whole school initiatives.
  • Model high quality learning and teaching practice and ensure a commitment to high expectations for all learners.

Skills & Experience Required

We are seeking a committed, skilled and ambitious school leader who:

  • Holds a relevant degree in English or a related discipline.
  • Possesses a recognised teacher education qualification (e.g., PGDE/PGCE) in Secondary English.
  • Is fully registered or eligible for full registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) in the English category.
  • Has a strong track record of delivering high quality learning and teaching, positive outcomes, and effective BGE and Senior Phase curriculum design.
  • Brings experience or demonstrable potential in leadership, staff development, and departmental management.
  • Has a deep understanding of literacy as a whole school responsibility and can lead strategies that impact learning across all subjects.
  • Is collaborative, reflective and committed to continuous school improvement.
