Under the general guidance of the Regional Service Director, the District Service Manager leads a team to drive operational strategies aligned with the company’s culture and long‑term goals, exceeding customer expectations. This individual provides direct oversight to multiple Service Centers throughout the region, ensuring high performance in safety, regulatory compliance, production, financial and waste management goals.
Responsibilities- Provide coaching and development to local managers and supervisors, including continuous feedback, performance appraisals, and alignment with company goals.
- Make recommendations and/or approve salary adjustments, promotions, transfers and dismissals within the assigned district.
- Participate in the recruitment and hiring of field leadership and drivers.
- Conduct regular meetings to inform teams of current issues, events, procedural changes and new developments.
- Oversight of selection, training and development of an effective, diverse workforce.
- Provide technical support to field staff, assist in content development and deployment of technical training.
- Stay updated on regulations and industry developments.
- Promote safety and security initiatives across the district.
- Implement, communicate and train safety protocols and compliance measures, ensuring regulatory adherence and operational efficiency.
- Initiate actions to resolve hazards or unsafe conditions promptly.
- Support sales in implementing new accounts, presenting services, responding to inquiries and technical information.
- Collaborate with commercial to maintain and monitor existing customer relationships.
- Drive superior customer satisfaction through team performance, adherence to customer SLAs and KPIs.
- Act with urgency to resolve customer issues to maintain high service levels and grow the business.
- Implement continual improvement of productivity standards and team member safety in accordance with financial goals.
- Manage route processes, including LTL, Bulk/FTL, pre‑service and post‑service execution.
- Develop and manage routes for efficient waste collection and transportation.
- Oversee technical services management (HHW, onsite programs, lab pack programs).
- Ensure service center management processes align with company goals and regulatory requirements.
- Manage P&L and performance against the financial plan.
- Maintain all 10‑day management processes aligned with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other related duties and/or project work as required.
- Education:
- B.S. in an environmental‑related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 40‑hour HAZWOPER training completed and current.
- Experience:
- Minimum 7 years in a related transportation field, including use of transportation management software, DoT regulations, logistics and vehicle maintenance.
- Minimum 5 years of proven leadership experience.
- Knowledge of applicable regulations and codes in the waste industry relevant to the area of responsibility.
- Ability to manage within a budget, with strong knowledge of budgetary processes, P&L statements, asset management and project management.
- Skills:
- Work independently with initiative and effective communication.
- Analyze P&L statements and track EBITDA levels.
- Understand DOT regulations.
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills, including delivering presentations to large groups.
- Lead and delegate effectively.
- Highly proficient computer skills and familiarity with software applications.
- Analyze complex data to develop actionable improvements.
- Plan, organize and manage projects; experience in formal project management is ideal.
- Proficiency in change management methodologies and practices.
- Interact with customers and manage SLAs and relationships.
- Knowledge of lean management, Six Sigma or other continuous improvement methodologies is a plus.
- Willingness and ability to travel by automobile, commercial airline and other public transportation up to 40% of the time.
- Visit each Service Center regularly to provide direct management oversight.
- Willingness and ability to work hands‑on to execute key initiatives and activities.
