Overview
The Recreation Supervisor for the Community Programs division is responsible for planning, organizing, executing, and directing the development and administration of well-rounded recreation programs to meet the needs of the community. Additionally, the Community Programs Supervisor trains, evaluates, and supervises employees and volunteers in the Community Programs division.

Responsibilities- Create new programs throughout the year for all age populations
- Lead and create special event offerings for the Town of Blacksburg
- Hire, train, and evaluate staff
- Supervise the division
- Recruit, secure, and work with volunteers
- Handle timesheets and payments for supplies and contractors
- Offer summer youth camp programs
- Work with local organizations to identify program needs
- Plan, organize, coordinate, lead, and direct the development and implementation of all-inclusive community recreation programs for all ages
- Creation and coordination of special events
- Analyze, interpret, and explain section policies and procedures
- Create, plan, and coordinate special events
- Establish and maintain partnerships to support programs and pursue sponsorship opportunities
- Must be available to work assigned program hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Knowledge of methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in the planning, development and administration of community recreational programs
- Knowledge of common recreational and social needs of various age groups
- Knowledge of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation
- Knowledge of principles and procedures for implementing and directing a wide variety of community services activities
- Knowledge of principles and practices of budget development
- Knowledge of office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
- Ability to be proactive
- Possess problem solving skills
- Ability to operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database application
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships with those contacted in the course of work
- Must be highly organized and have the ability to prioritize projects while handling multiple projects at the same time and continually growing the program.

- High School Diploma or GED certification
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation administration or a related field
- Two years of increasingly responsible recreational program administration experience
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
- First aid and CPR with AED certification
- Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment and at indoor and outdoor recreational facilities
- Travel to different locations
- Incumbents may be exposed to inclement weather conditions
- Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces
- Incumbents will be required to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends
- Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and recreation facility setting
- To stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
- To occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight
- To operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, including the use of a computer keyboard
- To travel to other recreation sites
- To verbally communicate to exchange information.
