This position will assist in the maintenance and repair of all traffic control devices and perform preventative maintenance on all traffic signals and warning beacons throughout the Town. Installing and repairing parking meters, pavement, and curb markings, and assisting in traffic signal maintenance and repairs as directed. The position will be responsible for work zone safety, including work zone setup and flagging traffic.
This position will work directly under the supervision of the Traffic Signal Maintenance Foreman, and responsibilities will include other duties as assigned for the safe and necessary operation of Town infrastructure. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.
Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

- Producing, installing, and repairing street identification and roadway signage
- Installing, operating, and repairing parking meters
- Installing and repairing pavement and curb markings
- Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic signal equipment, including traffic signal controllers, cabinets, signal heads, detection, back-up generator, and associated equipment.
- Troubleshoots problems with traffic signal equipment in order to determine procedures for repairs.
- Adjusts, replaces, cleans, and/or repairs traffic signal equipment such as signal heads, fuses, broken wires, lenses, and bulbs.
- General labor using hand tools and small equipment, including assorted power tools, digging implements, asphalt scarifier, generators, and handheld and powered pruning tools.
- Work zone setup and management, including flagging
- Roadway message board operation and maintenance
- Assists with small engine operation and maintenance, including permanent and mobile back-up generators.
- Will participate in after-hours on-call rotation.
- Qualified applicant must be able to, or have the ability to learn, the interpretation and use of electrical wiring diagrams and construction plans.
- Able or have the ability to learn how to use all basic handheld power tools with a thorough knowledge of necessary safety precautions.
- Set up and use ladders as well as occasional use of the bucket truck or aerial lift with a maximum working height of 40 ft.
- Thorough knowledge of work zone requirements and ability to safely work in and around the roadway.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and laptop with the applicable software programs to keep records of repairs and service operations and to prepare reports.
- Ability to lift heavy objects.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, and the general public.
- High school diploma or GED
- Two to five years of experience in traffic infrastructure maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- IMSA certification in work zone temporary traffic control technician, required within one year.
- IMSA certification in signs and markings, technician 1, required within one year.
- IMSA Signals Technician I certification, required within one year.
- IMSA Signals Technician II certification, required within two years.
- This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and reaching with hands and arms, and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, and lifting.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
- Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, requires working on ladders and in elevated positions, and occasionally wet, humid conditions (non-weather).
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required.
