Senior Mechanical Engineer

This is a full-time on-site role located in Blacksburg, VA, for a Senior Mechanical Engineer. The role involves designing and developing innovative mechanical systems and machinery, performing detailed machine design, and creating robust solutions to advance Solid Stir technologies. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will oversee project life cycles, from concept through production, and lead research and development efforts to improve existing designs.

Collaborating with cross-functional teams and ensuring adherence to project timelines and budgets is an integral part of the role. And willing to engage in shop floor activities, and perform other duties which relate to fabrication, assembly, and maintenance.

• Strong expertise in Mechanical Engineering and Machine Design and understanding the loading modes, failure criteria, design specifications, and considering ideal factors of safety, while adhering to engineering standards.
• Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools for creating detailed plans and models
• Ability to use shop equipment such as mills, lathe, grinders, and various hand tools to manufacture and modify components as needed.
• Knowledge to generate and understand CNC machine controls and write programs.
• Experience in Project Management, including overseeing timelines and budgets.
• Solid background in Research and Development (R&D) processes and methodologies.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively.
• Collaborate with R&D team to come up with new design solutions to engineering problems including modifications to improve existing designs.
• Develop project reports in time for submission to funding agencies.
• Should have an inner drive to meet or beat project deadlines.
• Leadership skills to manage and mentor junior team members.
• Familiarity with industry-specific standards and regulations.
• Ability to lift and assemble 50lb setup.

• Knowledge of any one of the finite element packages such as Ansys, Abaqus, or COMSOL.
• Knowledge of LabVIEW to understand the control codes, if possible, generate such codes.
