Job Description
The Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech seeks applications for one (1) nine-month faculty appointment at the rank of Instructor or Advanced Instructor, depending on experience, to begin in August 2026. Promotion opportunities within instructor ranks are available. Individuals will support the department’s teaching mission through delivery of large 1000- and/or 2000-level courses to majors and/or Pathways general education students.
The position is located on the Blacksburg campus with in-person and possibly online course modalities.
The successful applicant will teach courses including Cell Function and Differentiation, Genetics, and/or General Microbiology with the potential to be involved with the teaching of Principles of Biology (I, II). Individuals will work collaboratively with undergraduate teaching assistants in and out of the classroom. In addition to teaching, instructors contribute to the department through select service activities related to student engagement, undergraduate mentoring, curriculum design, and governance.

Required Qualifications- Doctoral degree in biological sciences, life science, or related field
- Educational background in the areas of genetics, cell biology, and/or general microbiology
- Demonstrated success teaching college-level biology courses
- Experience developing classroom and/or laboratory learning activities
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment
- Experience using Canvas Learning Management System or similar
- Experience teaching in the areas of genetics, cell biology, and/or general microbiology
- Experience teaching large (100+ student) courses
- Familiarity with evidence-based teaching approaches and pedagogy
- Experience with curriculum design and development
- Experience with online/distance learning
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to take initiative in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
