Undergraduate Academic Advisor – Virginia Tech
Location:
Blacksburg, VA.
Full-time professional faculty calendar year position in the College of Science at Virginia Tech assigned to the Virginia Tech School of Neuroscience program or another College of Science department.
Key responsibilities include:
- One‑on‑one advising of undergraduate students.
- Consistent and accurate communications with students.
- Confidential and accurate maintenance of student records.
- Advising majors on course selection, registration, and creating plans of study.
- Monitoring progress toward graduation and performing graduation clearances.
- Explaining college and university policies and procedures and communicating electronically with students.
- Working with students not making satisfactory academic progress to address deficiencies and create remediation plans.
- Cross‑training to become familiar with another undergraduate program offered in the College of Science.
- Assistance with interim advising for other College of Science departments as needed.

Required Qualifications- Master’s Degree from an accredited institution (preferred in student development, counseling, or education) or Bachelor’s Degree with equivalent training and/or experience in advising.
- Excellent communication, organizational, time‑management, problem‑solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently to meet deadlines and set work priorities.
- Knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and their Google application equivalents (Docs, Sheets, Gmail).
- Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, university, and department guidelines.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, prospective students, and their families.
- Employment experience in an academic unit, including previous work in academic student services, advising, recruiting, and curriculum processes.
- Overtime Status:
Exempt – Not eligible for overtime. - Appointment Type:
Regular. - Salary: $53,000 – $58,000.
- Hours Per Week: 40 hours – exempt position.
- Review Date:
January 12, 2025. - Successful candidates must have a criminal conviction check.
