Job Details
• Acute care psychiatric unit on the 4th floor of a hospital - a locked unit and the only child/adolescent inpatient unit in the region,
• 25 licensed beds; currently utilizing 3 adult beds and 6 adolescent beds,
• Patient population includes both adults and adolescents (travelers may work with both populations, separated by a door); common diagnoses include depression, anxiety, substance abuse, psychosis, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other behavioral or personality disorders,
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: 3:1 for adults (up to 7 patients possible); 6:1 for adolescents,
• Mental health techs/aides available (up to 2 when unit is at full census of 9 patients); interdisciplinary support includes occupational therapy (M-F), OT assistant, and social work,
• RT available in-house; CPAP, BiPAP, and some oxygen support provided on unit as needed,
• IV use is very rare on this unit,
• No telemetry monitoring responsibilities,
• Epic EMR,
• 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a),
• Every other weekend required,
• Every other holiday required,
• No on-call or standby requirement,
• Floating required throughout the hospital as helping hands or 1:1 sitters,
• Self-scheduling based on seniority; block scheduling accommodated when possible; union hospital,
Job Requirements
• Active ND or Compact (NLC) RN license - must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted,
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience,
• Acute/inpatient psychiatric or state hospital experience required,
• BLS certification required (active; pending not accepted),
• CHI Health Workplace Violence Prevention certification required,
• CPI certification preferred,
• Strong de-escalation and communication skills,
• Adolescent psychiatric experience preferred,
• Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility,
• Must not be currently employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) directly by any Common Spirit, CHI, or Dignity affiliated facility,
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire,
• Copy of driver's license required for consideration,
Additional Information
• Nurses are expected to be actively involved in patient care, including assisting with 15-minute safety rounds - not a passive, station-based role,
• Unit uses mechanical restraints (rarely) and seclusion; physical restraints are uncommon,
• In-hospital safety resources include emergency code blue buttons, security, code yellow for additional staff support, and a life safety desk,
• Charge nurse or house supervisor not always present; travelers are not typically expected to fill a charge role,
• Orientation consists of 2 x 12-hour unit-specific shifts (24 hours total),
• Scrubs may be any color except maroon; business casual attire also acceptable,
• RTO of 7 days or fewer per 13-week contract must be requested upfront; additional RTO will not be approved,
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply,
• Patience and a calm temperament are attributes that contribute to success on this unit
