Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Tele/PCU position at a Level II trauma facility in Bismarck, ND, requiring PCU experience and telemetry strip interpretation skills.

Details
  • Stepdown/PCU-level unit in an acute care hospital setting with 32 beds
  • Patient population includes adults and geriatrics with cardiac diagnoses such as cardiac caths, EP studies, and pacemakers, as well as patients with pneumonia, COVID on BiPAP, sepsis, influenza, ETOH, and acute-on-chronic conditions
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4–5, occasionally 1:5–6 on nights; PCU overflow care at 1:3
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Heparin, Nitroglycerin, Nipride, Lasix, and low-dose Dopamine
  • BiPAP, tracheostomy, and Airvo equipment used on the unit; RNs are responsible for management beyond basic troubleshooting
  • Portable telemetry monitors, in-room monitors, and a telemetry tech at the nurses' station are available; RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting their own strips
  • EMR:
    Epic (preferred, not required)
  • 12-hour shifts, days (7a–7p) and nights (7p–7a) available; rotating shifts will not occur more than once weekly
  • Every other weekend required
  • Every other holiday required
  • First to float; floating includes all areas as helping hands, full PCU patient loads, full Med/Surg assignments, and some ER holds/boarding
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • 13-week contract
Requirements
  • Active ND or compact (NLC) RN license required; pending licenses not accepted
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • PCU experience required
  • Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips required
  • Driver's license required for consideration
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
Additional Information
  • This is primarily a telemetry/cardiac unit with PCU-level overflow care
  • Charge nurses are present on both shifts and occasionally carry a light patient load of 2–3 patients
  • Nurse aides/patient care techs are on the unit with a goal ratio of 1:10
  • Orientation consists of 2 twelve-hour shifts (Friday and Saturday of the first week); nurses are expected to work independently beginning that Sunday
  • Any color scrubs are acceptable
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Candidates may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN at any facility associated with Common Spirit, including CHI and/or Dignity
  • RTO requests of 7 days or fewer per 13-week contract must be submitted upfront; additional RTO will not be approved
